MathematicsNewest Review: ... and all NUMBER of things (see what I did there?) But I HATE IT! My theory is you're either a mathematical-science person or an english-artsy person and I fall into the latter category. I always struggled with maths at school and I find numbers always get jumbled up in my head. Bizzarrely sometimes I can calculate numbers at such speed that my friends (who include people who actually LIKE maths, the sickos) are left open-mouthed as they havent had a chance to even consider the problem yet. Im sure in the jumbled, unable-to-even-add-up brain of mine, there lies a maths genius dying to break free! Just crying out for some sudoku or a mathemat... more |

Why?? WHY???? WHYYYYY?? was mathe ever invented?? Ok I know why really, its a fantastic subject because it helps us to quantify and understand the world around us enabling us to measure and calculate distances, weights, size, speed and all NUMBER of things (see what I did there?) But I HATE IT! My theory is you're either a mathematical-science person or an english-artsy person and I fall into the latter category. Mathematics is a subject that brings dread to alot of people. I was slightly fortunate to have been quite good at the subject whilst I was at school and like alot of subjects when you are at school it is alot about how well you are taught as well as how good you are at learning and how easily you can grasp the material. Some people maybe give up more easily then others when it comes to complicated mathematical equations and sums. When doing GCSE maths ,because I had alot of other GCSE'S i was doing , any subject which I found slightly hard I kind of left out on my paper (e.g Vectors, Circle theorems etc) but as it was higher paper the % required to get an A ... Mathematics - in my mind you either are good or bad at this subject! I admit I am very bad at maths. EARLY MEMORIES I can remember when I was only 8 years old and found maths (or "sums" as we called them then) difficult. I have a distinct memory of sitting next to a boy in my class and copying all his answers and then another distinct memory of the telling off from the teacher who knew I had copied, because we had both got the same wrong answers and I was the one who owned up to cheating!!! I was so ashamed of having cheated that I made an effort to work really hard but still found maths difficult! I can remember starting ... Read the complete review

Whatever you think about maths - forget it. Once you’ve tasted A-level, it’s a two way road. One way, the way I think I’ve chosen, is to get as far as the exam then ditch it. The other way, the way taken by my friend, is to go as far as Maths, as a degree, at Trinity College Cambridge - the hardest maths course in the world. Ok let’s start from the beginning - GCSE. The classic exam which I took involved such areas as circle theorems, equation re-arrangement, how-to-use your calculator, quadratic equations, Pythagoras’ theorem, basic statistics up to standard deviation and simple number crunching like multiplying fractions. Not ... Read the complete review

As some of you will know, I’ve recently started back at college to do some further AS levels. I got it into my head last year while doing A2 physics that I wanted to do a physics degree. It is for this reason I am back at college. To do a physics degree you need an A-level in Maths. This opinion/review, whatever you want to call it, will therefore only currently focus on the AS level (if I continue it on to A2 level I will update this review then). Right, onto the matter in hand. The new Curriculum 2000 changes means us students now do the AS levels, comprising of three modules of study. You can then either drop the subject and leave with ...
