Advantages: useful subject , helps you to think and is rewarding especially when you finally solve a problem!
Disadvantages: can be hard/boring,
Mathematics is a subject that brings dread to alot of people. I was slightly fortunate to have been quite good at the subject whilst I was at school and like alot of subjects when you are at school it is alot about how well you are taught as well as how good you are at learning and how easily you can grasp the material. Some people maybe give up more easily then others when it comes to complicated mathematical equations and sums.
When doing GCSE maths ,because I had alot of other GCSE'S i was doing , any subject which I found slightly hard I kind of left out on my paper (e.g Vectors, Circle theorems etc) but as it was higher paper the % required to get an A was not really high so I managed to get one.
At A level there are probably less topics to cover but they are covered more in depth. I think I enjoyed Maths alot more especially the Statistics part at A level. We had a pretty good teacher who went through examples and the theory quite throughly and so this helped alot. Statistics looks at samples and surveys and then calculates statistics based on them like standard deviation, mode ,median range etc. Also various ways of displaying statistics and data can be learnt doing this course. The other part of the A Level course I did involved Pure Maths. This includes such delights as trigonometry (sin, cos, tan), calculus (differentiation/integration etc) and algebra ( X +y=z^2 etc). I did these courses a few years ago now so they might have changed slightly but probably not alot.
Mathematics is an important subject I think and it is useful to learn some of the techniques. The actual practicalities of using most of the techniques especially those learnt at A level is probably not common unless you actually want to go into a career to do with mathematics such as engineering, statistical research, teaching maths etc. I was fortunte enough maybe to be pretty good at Maths in school but it is not generally seen as the easiest subject and sometimes requires you to think alot and get confused especially when you see loads of letters when you expect numbers! You also need to have an interest in it especially at A Level or further otherwise you will easily lose focus.
Summary: useful subject
