Advantages: what advantages?

Disadvantages: The really needy people often don't get what they are entitled to.

Means testing seems, at first sight, a logical way of providing money to the genuinely needy....but quite frankly, the aspects of it that I have experienced within this family show that the whole thing is the greatest money supplier in the country for all those who know how to fiddle the system.

Several years ago a family member walked out on her husband; took all his money out of the bank, spent it, then later had the infernal nerve to claim disability allowances and housing benefits. She set her children up in a flat, all costs paid, and today has disappeared from the face of the earth (as far as the family is concerned; quite untraceable. The courts are still chasing her for money.
A number of years prior, we rented out a property to a couple who, unknown to us, were regular benefits fraudsters. Our solicitor failed in his duty to spot this. The couple claimed their housing benefits and spent the lot every month on luxuries; we never got a penny of our rent.

Means testing? Load of crap. It ought to be completely scrapped and redesigned, to prevent the scum of society from gobbling up money that ought to go to genuinely needy people.

In addition to the opinion I made; it is now in the news that the PM is insisting on testing people every three years now, to determine whether or not they should be claiming invalidity benefit. I'm sorry to upset those who still think that the system should remain unchanged; but if you actually knew someone (as I do) who was claiming the maximum invalidity benefit, and had lied their way through the doctor's surgery about the state of their health, then you'd be livid too.
My sister in law claimed a "dodgy back" for years, went on to claim huge amounts of benefits and was banking more money per week than I was when I was working fulltime. She had deliberately studied the benefits systems for years before leaving her husband and knew exactly how to turn things to her advantage. I don't work any more (by choice)and it boils me to see people twisting the system.
Who will be responsible for determining who is genuine? There should be some way of weeding out the cheats. I don't intend to temper my opinions either; that's what this site is for, and if people can't speak their minds, well thats a hard job.

I can see your point, but who will be responsible for determining who is genuine, there was an article in our local paper recently amount a woman confined to a wheelchair recently after suffering a severe stroke, who had about 10% mobility in her arms, the DSS stopped her benefit because they deemed her fit for work. I think the wording is a little strong, but would raise the questions who and how would genuine claimants and fraudsters be determined?

unfortunately it is usually those with the most money who fraud the most out of the government since they are the ones who know all the regulations and how best to avoid them
