I'm guessing that when this category was set up it is intended to show the pressure that the media exerts on those in the public spotlight such as celebrities, politicians and in particular sports people. To be honest it is a double edged sword as without the media many of these people would not have the power, fame or influence that they crave so much, after all the current government invented the art of spin as a way of securing power and it has been a long tradition of politicians to selectively leak details to the edia that will benefit their own party or their own careers. Where to start, ok i'll start on a personal note. I?m now a semi recovered anorexic and bulimic. And my view on the media to do with eating disorders is so mixed. Firstly, an eating disorder does not root from seeing a pretty picture in a cheap ass magazine; it roots from inside you, childhood maybe? That was what mine 'rooted from' Misplaced anger. I can guarantee that every woman, has thought something like 'ohh I wish I had her flat stomach' or 'ohh I wish i had Julia Roberts long thin legs' Sure you?ve all thought something along those lines, everybody has, so why doesn?t everyone have an eating disorder hey? Media Pressure - fair or foul?: No vote of confidence here. (711 words)

I think it’s the press who reminds the clubs which managers to sack. With a quarter of the season gone we have lost a quarter of the managers. The attrition rate in the past year has been horrendous in the Nationwide league with 40 of the 72 being at their present clubs for less than a year. Sir Alex took five years to sow the seeds of Manchester Uniteds greatness through perseverance with the youth potential and that of the chairman. Its interesting to note that the top four clubs seem to have the most stable management policy over the brief history of The Premiership. David O`leary looks like he could deliver Leeds the championship this year. With no ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Political football? (333 words)

Following the tragic events in America recently, there were immediate calls from some quarters for domestic football fixtures to be suspended. It would be 'disrespectful' for games to go ahead, it was claimed, in the light of such a tragedy. Furthermore, such global events show football to be a trivial sideshow, it was said. Fine, but then why call for it to be postponed if it's so unimportant? I didn't hear any outraged complaints from media commentators when the stock markets continued to trade, and the US stock exchange opened as soon as was feasible. With sorrow and dignity, to be sure, but there was nothing to be gained from keeping it closed as a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Media Pressure - fair or foul?: A sporting chance? (1186 words)

The British press seems to be a rather strange animal. At one time, it was a reserved and formal, providing information in a stiff although informative fashion. And here’s a treat for you, I’ve got an example of their style from a collection of Illustrated London News papers, bound and dated 1871… ** The Cape of Good Hope. The news from the diamond fields is of the usual character. Some men are fortunate; others dig without results and return, impoverished to the English settlements. From Martizburg we have reports of “extraordinary yields” of gold at the northern gold fields. This news is brought by Mr. ...  Read the complete review
