Megan's Law - should we have it here in the UK?

Megan's Law - should we have it here in the UK? ... The offender lived right across the street from Megan's residence, however the Police Department was prohibited from disclosing the presence of this child molester because, at the time, the law did not allow the release of sex offender information to the public. The law was changed to permit the release of this information to the public and on May 8, 1996, President Clinton signed the law, dubbed "Megan's Law." The California State Legislature signed California's version of Megan's Law into effect on September 25, 1996. This law was implemented to allow potential victims to protect themselves and allow parents to protect their children.

I really have difficulty in understanding peoples reservations about introducing something similar to Megan's Law in the UK. Whatever misgivings people may have about driving potential paedophiles underground, anything that has the potential to stop a possible attack is wholly worthwhile. Civil liberty rights should be suspended upon commitment of such crimes and the provision of anonymity is nothing less than devaluing the offence. The victim of such a crime has to endure a lifetime of memories and it should not be forgotten that their families suffer with them. Rebuilding lives after such an event takes a lot of time and hard work and may go on to cause ...  Read the complete review

Statistically most abuse takes place within the immediate family and when it is outside the family then in the majority of those cases the attacker is known to the victime usually through the extended family or close family friends. It is something like only 10% of cases where the attacker is unknown hence I'm not convinced that posting the whereabouts of local offenders is likely to have a huge beneficial effect What it could end up doing is either encourage those of thesex offenders register to go underground and then ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Megan's Law - should we have it here in the UK?: How to win votes and not protect our children. (1060 words)

Although peadophillia is hidden in all social class I always raise a rye smile at the types of people who seem to be the ones most upset about pedophiles, ritually turning out to ‘brick’ the police van with the nasty “pedo” inside as it leaves the police cells on those news reports. The regiments of camouflaged Burberry pushchairs and angry young grunts in baseball caps, the gauntlet the vans have to run, are often another kind of Kangaroo court for these sex offenders when they sadly get out. I suppose my poiint is that any policy on pedophiles is purely about winning votes ,not pretecting our children. The truth, of course, is that less than six children ...  Read the complete review
