Premium Review Metal Detecting: Give peace a chance! (273 words)

I am a keen metal detectorist and have been since I was a young lad. It is now nearly 30 years since I started. After reading another review on here I have to agree entirely with the view that Metal Detectorists and Archaeologists have had their disagreements in the past and I can see why. Without repeating the well written by collingwood21 I really think that she puts the argument quite well. I am not going to give the argument from the Archaeologists point of view. They are intelligent enough to do that themselves. However what I will say is that in general the Metal Detectorists and Archaeologists have found themselves becoming closer together. This op could just possibly make you rich beyond your wildest dreams. I am going to tell you how to find treasure, not pirate’s booty but gold and silver nevertheless. Over the ages it has been commonplace to lose cash and small metal objects, just as we do today. What is a £1 coin to us today was a silver or gold coin to our ancestors. These coins were generally found in a very short space of time unless they were dropped in grass or in water. Have you ever dropped something in long grass and then tried to find it? It is just about impossible and if the item is small then the difficulty becomes even greater. Over the years these items are gradually ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Metal Detecting: Treasure Sharing (978 words)

For many years now, there has been ongoing animosity between archaeologists and those who undertake metal detecting as a hobby. I have chosen to write this op, not as a detector user (like all other ops in this category) but from the point of view of somebody who is involved in archaeology – I hope to outline the issues involved in this matter, and provide a balanced alternative to the opinions written from the hobbyist’s side. There are an estimated 30,000 metal detecting enthusiasts in Britain, drawn to the hobby by the excitement of discovery and possible financial gain. The stereotypical image is of a bloke walking across a field, head bent in ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A lot of fun (331 words)

In my youth a group of us used to go metal detecting, it was great fun and we used to find a fair bit too. On the sands, it’s really surprising what people leave or drop behind, we used to find old watches, some of which still worked and rings. We did find coins from time to time, but they were mainly pennies, but it was really enjoyable. It all started when for a school project we did it on metal detecting, the mere fact that we could find some treasure or something interesting was a great appeal to us, and we were the envy of the class. We used to go to the local parks, reservoirs, beaches and generally where people were situated. We ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Metal Detecting: it pays for itself! (344 words)

Metal detecting is such a great way to spend any free time in the open! You will learn so much about history; from the recent to the very old! Metal Detecting is a hobby anyone can take up - it provides light exercise and getting heand on with our very interesting history. You needn't start shelling out load of cash on kit, after all, the detector will pay for itself! - all you'll need is an entry-level detector to learn the basics with and teach you the skills of detecting (I reccommend the Viking 6DX2 - £135), a decent trowel/spade - you can get very good metal detecting diggers for about £25, a head cover to protect the search head and, lastly, ...  Read the complete review
