Advantages: Charities can benefit, You can enjoy it as long as your sensible

Disadvantages: People become obssessed with material worth and not else matters, Killings take place over money

Many years ago when l was still at secondary school l took part in a public speaking competition and the subject which l had to speak for was the title of my opinion – Money is the Root of all Evil. We didn’t win that debate – then again it was my first attempt at public speaking!

Even before the exchange of currency for products, services and time came into existence, human beings bartered. You know back in the Middle Ages – “ If you give me 4 sheep and a chicken I’ll give you a cow” “ No way 2 sheep and 2 chickens are equivalent to your auld cow” - get the picture! Money or exchange of one thing or item for another is an every day essential – no matter now much we would like to dress it up or down.

We need money to pay the bills, feed the family and cover our heads. The 3 basic necessities of man – everything above and beyond this are luxuries. To get this money most of us have to work. We work to live apparently. We work to give our families and ourselves those extra little luxuries we would not otherwise have – you know ice-cream, a new shirt, a car, holidays and so on.

The focus of this fast track new century is around money. There are people out there who would sell their own grandmother if they thought it was going to make them a quick buck. Society is obsessed with cash – of that there is no doubt. Why else do drug traffickers become involved in such lines of work – for money – the benefits seem to out weigh the risks – or do they? Do they realise if they are caught in some far flung country, life imprisonment is a certainty or even death – surely no amount of cash is worth incarceration and the removal of your civil liberties? It doesn’t make sense to me.

How often do we read in the tabloid press (ok so 90% may not be true but lm using it as an example only!) of lottery winner’s family’s s
plitting or friends taking other friends to court as they want a share of good fortune – see what the evil dollar has been known to do?

Now don’t get me wrong – money can make changes for the better also. Think of all the charitable donations and the good that they go too. How events such as Comic Relief, Children in Need or Band Aid raise millions of pounds to help those less fortunate than ourselves. For people in such situations – concern about where they will sleep that evening or where the next mouthful of food is coming from ia of much more concern than where the next buck will come from. Seeing how others lives are in a much worse state than your own will helps to put things into context.

I will never be overly rich – l know that. I’m not a saver – never have been and never will. As my father always says “ Money burns a hole in my pocket!” and he’s right too! To me money is for spending – if l can bring happiness to myself, friends or family l will do so. It’s much more important. I will always have enough (hopefully) to be comfortable – enjoy the odd holiday, get that new outfit l saw, or buy a chippy dinner, but l cannot see me becoming a hotshot investor – its simply not in my nature!

Money is the root of all evil in some respects, it can cause death and destruction, but on the flip side – because of money through charitable donations good has been done. People who may not have lived have survived.

The only advice l can give is to not become obsessed by money – it really won’t do you any good. Stay healthy and stay happy.

Heather

Note the only reason l recommend money is because bottom line is we need money to survive.

Never had a lot, and never likely to, but I would just like loads and loads for one day 'just to see if I liked it!'
