Advantages: I can laugh about it now
Disadvantages: It was embarrassing and painful at the time
I'm fairly used to embarrassing myself, unfortunately, I seem to have a knack for it, whether it be through walking around work, not realising i'd split my trousers, or once accidentally asking Ridley Scott what he did for a living at a gig, i'm a bit dopey i'm afraid sometimes.
My most embarrassing moments are twofold on a holiday I remember now with amusement. I'd recently split with a girl and thought I should discover myself and needed a break so booked 10 days in the Dominican Republic, all went well, I got there, made some lovely friends and enjoyed myself no end, one day I went to a water park with my new friends, it was great fun, when we got to the park it looked a bit ropey but it was hot, there was water and I love adrenaline so rushed off to the nearest slide while everyone else bathed.
I shot down the slide at some rate, halfway down I felt a cut in my back, I continued down the slide until I reached the bottom, thinking i'd scratched myself through the friction I carried on wading through the swimming pool, and noticed the horrified stares of swimmers, edging away, I then saw blood behind me, I panicked thinking someone was hurt and moved to see what it was, I could see nothing, I turned again and there was more blood behind me, it was only when I left the pool and saw blood pouring from my back that I realised what had happened, first aid ensued, the slide was closed and that was my trip to the waterpark over.
The following day I was challenged to a game of tennis in the midday sun by a friendly if not overly competitive German called Heinz, we had a good game and honours were fairly even, ok, I lost but I felt like i'd won as i'm not very good at tennis.
I went back to my room for a shower having lost pounds of sweat, unfortunately back in my room, I shut the bathroom door, ran some water, which turned out to be hot not cold, and had a lovely wash, unfortunately on trying the door (a large solid oak door) it wouldn't open, I was trapped, there was a tiny window with bars on it, looking out, but people were either out in the sun or on trips, so nobody could hear my yelps, as it was steaming hot, I was dehydrated, I couldn't drink the tap water, what a nightmare.
Three hours later after fearful shouting and screaming a passing German could hear if not understand me and notified the hotel, who eventually had to break down the door, I was so weak and dehydrated at this point I was laid out on the floor part covered by a towel, panting like a huge pansy.
That evening in the bar everytime I popped to the loo, some wag would follow and lodge the door shut just to hear my panicked cries, hilarious....not!!
Whilst I don't blame Heinz in anyway for the embarrassment I did chuckle a few days later, when at a white water rafting event we went too, he got too competitive, made a disparaging remark to a scouser and was hit on his head (He had a helmet on, so it wasn't too painful) with a paddle and fell out of the raft!!!
