Advantages: open 24 hours
Disadvantages: expensive, little choice, could be cleaner
I have always thought of our motorway service stations as being overexpensive in all aspects. It is understandable to a degree, bearing in mind the remoteness of these places, and having to man them 24 hours. But I do feel that the operators go too far in cashing in on this. As for standards, occasionally they make efforts - only when prompted by bad publicity from the media. But standards always slip back to shoddiness. By comparison, our European counterparts operate to a far higher standard. One area I find particular about are toilet facilites. Our service areas display a notice about attendant cleaning times etc. but they are few and far between cleans. Always smelling foul etc. On the continent, the toilets are always staffed, and clean enough to eat off the floor. Foodwise we are offered so little choice usually bland and cold. And overpriced. We should have more service stations along our motorways like the M6 and M25, where the traffic nowadays is so busy. God help you if there are coach parties and your trying to get some food or use the loo.

- 12/07/01 Same old whingeing.
Doo as we doo, get off the motorway wher there is a town/city close by. There is usually a supermarket on the oustkirts. Cheaper petrol/sandwiches, with a cafe sometimes, and alwys better loos. Takes no more than 5 - 10 minutes longer to doo this. We are now getting to know the best places. perhaps I should doo an op on this aspect. |

- 10/07/01 Not a bad idea for an op, but I think if it were longer and a bit more chatty you would get a lot more readers.
Cheers
