Advantages: Real milk, Wendy's burgers, cheap jacket potatoes, pleasant and clean surroundings
Disadvantages: Generally pricy, can get extremely busy
I do a lot of travelling and seem to spend a great deal of time in motorway services and the by and away the best that I have visited is First services. All motorway services seem to charge excessive prices - I can't see that there is a lot to choose between them and First is no real exception. Its the little things which makes First head and shoulders above the others for me. Firstly, they will give you real milk with your coffee. This may seem like a minor point but I hate and detest those little cartons of non-dairy whatever-it-is. The second major point in their favour is that they have a Wendy's burger bar. This is nothing like the McD's and BK offerings - the Wendy's burgers taste like beef and come with loads of proper salad and relish in them not a mashed up gherkin and brown lettuce. Other than this, there is a standard serve-yourself sandwich and salad bar and a hot meals counter. They do a jacket potato with one filling for £1.50 which is pretty good or a plain one for £1. There are the standard facilities - shop, flowers, cashpoint, video games as well of some of the best-kept toilets (complete with fresh flowers) that I have come across. I will admit that the prices here are about on par with all other motorway services. Nevertheless, it is a pleasant place to stop and the staff always seem friendly. They have overnight facilities too but I've not yet used them.

- 23/09/00 While on holiday in france, My wife and I got friendly with a couple from Durham, The guy was a long distance lorry driver and as we were returning the same day we followed them from the heart of France all the way to Durham, on the way he managed to show me a couple of places he always stops at when he is on his travels, they were both truck stops, no mod cons, no frilly bits or video games but they did serve up terrific meals and huge mugs of tea and coffee at a fraction of the price that Granada etc serve up, I only wish I could remember where they were :) |

- 09/09/00 I've never heard of First. Whenever I travel I just see loads of Granada's - urg! Isn't there a website called something like 5 minutes from the motorway which lists nice places to eat which are, errr, 5 minutes from the motorway? |

- 08/09/00 A jacket potato in a service station for £1.00, with a filling for £1.50!!! where do you find these service stations? I had to pay £1.00 for a small bottle of water the other day, so anywhere that sells ANYTHING cheap is good enough for me! |
