Advantages: My favourites
Disadvantages: Could include so many more!
This piece is the result of Competition.Man's challenge / survey regarding our musical tastes - he's offering an incentive so go and read his piece for details and then write one yourself! In writing this I've really wracked my brains and have gone back and corrected quite a lot. I'm also cheating lots by putting in some runners up! I hope that it reflects the fact that I have a decent taste in music - I'll be intrigued to see your comments! 1) favourite last dance smoochie Cheesy I know - Stevie Wonder. I just called....... 2) best cover version All along the Watchtower. Jimi Hendrix took Dylan's song and made it his own. Quite simply an astonishing piece of music. Runners up: Black Crowes version of Hard to Handle by Otis Redding, Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley (Leonard Cohen) and almost forgot to include Travis' version of Hit me baby one more time (Britney - yes I know but its a genius cover). 3) worst cover version. Not too fond of Madonna's American Pie (Don McClean) and I can't forgive the Counting Crows for changing the lyrics to Big Yellow Taxi (Joni Mitchell). 4) Best Male Vocal The deep sugar coated tones of Issac Hayes are simply incredible (check out "Hot Buttered Soul" if you don't believe me!) and if we're along that track then the late great Barry White rates an honourable mention. 5) Best Female Vocal Current favourite is Alicia Keys. 'Falling' is a truly amazing performance. Going back a bit I do like a bit of Aretha. 6) Best Duo + / Group Ooh this is really really difficult! I do like the standards - REM, U2 and Oasis but I'm going to say the Chilli Peppers coz I always have at least one of their discs in the car. 7) Most memorable Song Memorable in terms of an associated memory? Hotel California was the song I woke up to on the first day of my
gap year and it will always stick in my mind - but it has to be the live version. 8) Your Song Play me Time after Time by Cyndi Lauper and I melt - not very macho I know. Live Forever by Oasis also gets me shouting along (if you heard me try to sing you'd understand what I mean!) 9) Best Female Vocal Performance I'm not really a big fan of her or the song, but I can appreciate the performance of I will always love you by Whitney. 10) Best Male Vocal Performance I'm going to say Sinatra but couldn't give you one specific song. 11) Most Poignant Song Queen - The Show must go on. Nothing else comes close. 12) All Time Favourite Album Marvin Gaye - What's going on? At the height of his powers, a tremendous piece of music and social commentary. 13) Best Music Video Sledgehammer by Peter Gabriel. Tremendously innovative at the time and the sheer effort that went into it is amazing - brilliant. 14) Best Act Ever Queen - for the unrivalled live performances, the music which stayed fresh over three decades and the tragic rock star ending. 15) Best TV / Film musical piece After waiting for 16 years, the orchestra striking up the first chord at the beginning of Phantom Menace was almost a religious experience. Shame the film didn't match up to it. For an overall film the original score to Star Wars would battle out Saturday Night Fever's soundtrack.
