Disadvantages: Oh, the thinking, Legwarmers, Fish do NOT have ears

Well, feeling a little bored and having finally got onto the computer (and internet) for the first time properly in what seems like a long time, what should pop up – a DooYoo challenge… hurrah! I’m starting to doubt my facilities as a human being without regular internet access…it’s not the same at work and they do frown somewhat on opinionating/chatting etc. It’s been a long time since I’ve written anything and even longer since I’ve thought…. *puts thinking cap on* Thanks for the challenge MrCMan

Favourite last dance smoochie?

Oooh, tough one, never really a ‘last dance’ kinda fish me, although top of my list of penultimate last dance songs for me has to be Hi Ho Silver Lining. Whenever that comes on in a discothèque, you know that Whitney and other such crooners won’t be far behind, that and Baggy Trousers by Madness would be my personal favs, but as for smoochy songs I don’t think you can beat George Michael (unless you’re in a public loo, then I’m led to believe it’s mandatory) ;o) Erm… seasonal one would be ‘Last Christmas’ all year rounder would be Careless Whisper or if I’m feeling particularly cheesey, you can’t get better than Lady In Red. *takes off thinking cap and dons flat-cap, pipe and slippers as she’s feeling rather old*

Best cover version?

Covers suck, although I quite liked White Stripes cover of the Burt Baccarack << spelling? Classic, I just don’t know what to do with myself. I was also quite taken by the Corrs version of Fleetwood Macs’ Dreams. But generally covers suck. Alien Ant Farm’s version of Smooth Criminal was quite spiffing too…. Wow, I’ve just realized that there’s more than one cover song that I actually like and that’s without mentioning Jason Donovan’s version of Sealed with a Kiss. Moving Swiftly
on………..

Worst Cover Version?

Pretty much everything that Robson & Gerome/Will Young/Gareth Gates did.

Best Male Vocal?

Very hard choice for me here, but I would have to say the best Male vocal’s I can ever recall hearing would have to be on a duet of Under my Skin. Imagine Frank Sinatra and Bono singing together, if you’ve never heard it, try and find it, it’s quite possibly perfect. Then I would like to make a passing mention to the gorgeous Jarvis Cocker (rocking name, huh?) on pretty much everything he’s done and Elvis too, that man has/had a voice that could melt the knickers off a nun. Made an excellent discovery on holiday an artist by the name Jarabe de Paulo, he sings in Spanish, and he’s a kind of funky, jazzy, poppy, guitarry kinda guy. You could probably hunt his latest album (Bonito) down on the internet or if you ask in your local record shop they may be able to order you one…*pours some bubble mixture into the pipe and ponders if people buy ‘records’ anymore*

Best Female Vocal?

Now I’ve never really been a fan of female vocalists per say, however, Billie Holiday would be my number one choice. Eva Cassidy and Patsy Cline fall in at second place with Skunk Anansie bringing up the rear for best female voice for me. Unfortunately both Eva and Patsy met with early untimely deaths, but I can’t help but wonder if that’s one of the reasons that they both sound so magical when they sing. There’s no jaded edge to their voices born of many years in a horrible cut-throat industry. I am a closet Natalie Imbruglia fan too, at the moment I’m listening to her first (and best) album in the car – it’s great for having a good sing-song on the way to work to wake and brighten yourself up for the day.

Best Duo/Group?

U2 is the winner of this category although I went off them a fair bi
t when they went all ‘poppy’ with Zooropa et al. Although The Beautiful South are a group that I never tire of listening too. They seem to have a hit with every song they release… who can forget Song for Whoever, You keep it all in, Rotterdam or Don’t Marry Her? I did rather like Space when they first came out until they released their album Spiders. It’s a cracking album, but with my acute arachnophobia, I can’t even pick up the case, let alone the CD which is covered in the little blighters. Excellent songs, though. I would tell you what some of them are called, but I can’t look at the album. The Female of the Species is probably their most famous song (hence the album title I guess) And the Gypsy Kings have to get a mention for the sheer skill – and their cover version of Hotel California or should I say Otel Kaleefawnya! It’s in the Big Lebowski. Pink Floyd also rating in this category for me and basically most people who can actually play a guitar/instrument are worthy of a mention.

Most Memorable Song?

Most memorable songs to me conjure up images of funerals, weddings, other unhappy occasions etc. Woman (John Lennon) was my granny’s favourite song and the one we sent her off with. Every time I hear it I can picture my Dad crying at her funeral. Memories (Elvis Presley) Memories….pressed between the pages of my mind, memories, sweeten through the ages just like wine” beautiful words and it was not only one of the songs at my Mum’s funeral, I always remember watching the Elvis Comeback Special video with my Mum, it’s at the end and it always made both of us cry. But, ending on a more happy note, You Really Got me Going by the Rolling Stones is a rather memorable song for me as there’s a line in it that says “See, you really got me going, you got me so I can’t sleep at night” and Mr Fishbulb aside from calling me Fishbulb call
s me “C” (my initial) and used to sing it to me “C, you really got me going….etc” *grins*

Your Song?

I’m a little confused here, if this is my favourite song section then I have a list as long as I can remember, but I’ll go with “my” as in “our” song and it’s got to be either She said So (The Beatles) you can quite often catch me and the Mr Fish singing this (in harmony) in the car, in the bath, in the street. We like to sing. We have been known on occasion to jump up and sing Summer Lovin’ on the karaoke if the mood takes. Oh the shame. *pulls cap down over her eyes*

Best Female Vocal Performance?

I’m going to go out on a pop-limb here, which is not only unheard of for me, it’s bloody dangerous and I’m going to go for Christina Aguilara. Beautiful was such a simple song but I’ve heard so many people try and sing it and no one’s come close. Dirrrty was pretty funky too and gets my vote just for the video! Debbie Harry was pretty good when she fronted Blondie, but now she’s just an old crone and I think she’s lost her sparkle. Sam Brown was rather good (one hit wonder daughter of Joe Brown) excellent song Stop released in the *ahem* 80’s.

Best Male Vocal Performance?

See Bono / Sinatra mention under male artiste!

Most Poignant Song?

A boy name Sue by Johnny Cash. Probably the most memorable song for me do a search for “A Boy Named Sue” on Yahoo and you’ll find the lyrics, but ignore the first link as it’s an advert for a video of a transsexuals story of ‘the change’ – ah hell, take a look at the first link too, it’s quite interesting. A more serious answer would be ‘Honey’ by Bobby Goldsboro. It’s a country ballad *hopes people keep reading in spite of the description* the song’s all about
a tree that his wife in the song planted and he teased her about it being just a twig, now he’s singing about how big the tree is. I know it sounds really pap, but it’s really a very very sad song. It really tugs on the heartstrings.

All Time Favourite Album?

Probably the Pulp Fiction Sound Track. A bit of a cop out I know, but with such diversity as Dusty Springfields Son of a Preacher Man and The Statler Brothers Flowers on the Wall there’s probably one, maybe two tracks I’d skip through on this, but that’s not because they’re bad tracks, just because the ones after them are that much better.

Best Music Video?

I can’t remember the last time I watched a music video aside from in the gym. Christina Aguilara’s last few offerings have been quite good. Peter Gabriel was always well up there with funky videos and new ideas. I quite liked The Frog Chorus by Paul McCartney as a small child, but I suspect that even though I have the video (with two other bonus songs on it) that it’s not as good now as it was back then. One of my favourite songs would be Nena's 99 Red Balloons. Video was quite funky and I remember our shopping centre doing a similar stunt. You paid 50p to release a balloon and I was there when they released X-thousand of them. Like videos come to life it was.

Best Act Ever?

Steps…. Hahahahahaa.. not really. Another toughy. I’m trying not to mention the same folks and songs all the time so this time I’ll go for Oasis, who are indeed a great group and although I grew bored of them a few years ago, I can quite happily pick up any of their albums and give it a spin.

Best act/best group?

Haven’t I answered this already?

Best TV/Film musical piece?

Crossroads. NOT the one with Brittany’s Pears in it, the only film worthy of the name Crossroads – the one with Ralph
Macchio in it (Karate Kid, who’s now 40 feeling old yet?) Basically a film set a few decades ago in Blues country - Southern, North America. A guy sells his soul to the devil to be a brilliant guitarist. In the end, the devil plays him at the guitar for his soul. Ralph Macchio playing his classical / blues / white boy style and Steve Vai as the devils’ right hand man. Amazing music throughout the film, but the play-off is exactly how you would imagine it. The devil, it seems owns a nightclub full of dancing floozys and great guitars. If that’s hell then boy I’m gonna be a big sinner.

Best personal computer (any) music software?

I’m not quite sure about this one. I’m not usually allowed on the computer on my own. The electrical music creator I own is my Les Paul and a rather snazzy Boss effects pedal. Don’t get much better than that

I really enjoyed this but I disagree about Christina Aguielera not Beautiful, that's a top song and her voice is superb but the videos, oh give me strength! Maybe I'm homophobic (lesaphobic?) or something but when I go the gym and it's just Britney, Christina, Pink and Beyonce doing their soft porn thing with a song kind of incidentally attached as an after thought it just makes me cringe and I have to go home.... And Beautiful is the exception to the rule, because apart from that their music makes me cringe too! Oh dear, does that make me a head case?
