Advantages: a good chance to take stock and think about changing my lifestyle

Disadvantages: who knows how good my will-power is...

Having made a solitary, but important, New Year's Resolution going into 2006, namely to return to singledom after two years of a not altogether unhappy relationship, but one which had gone sour and was getting me down, I enter 2007 in a different frame of mind. I'm currently treading very carefully and building up a friendship with a delectable young lady - and this is my first resolution - to do what it takes to get to know her better.

This aside - it is a resolution of heart and mind, I am making other resolutions, which are more serious than in previous years - given mainly the fact that I am hurtling headlong towards turning 30. With the three-oh in mind I have decided upon the following lifestyle-related resolutions.

1) More exercise: I feel that I am too sedentary, so I am forcing myself to go for a walk every day - today 1st January I spent an hour walking around my district and it blew away the cobwebs. I wouldn't imagine that I will do the circuit everyday but the 5km walk was certainly a good start. I am also looking at some kind of home gym as I doubt I would use a gym membership.

2) Worrying less about work, and working less late nights: I have stayed up tonight until the small hours drawing up a work schedule and also a chart for logging my work (in terms of hours) and also my late nights spent in front of the computer working - to try to get myself to cut down in this respect.

3) To entertain more: Having dedicated a large chunk of the Christmas break to getting the apartment shipshape again, which has worked, I want to entertain more. Granted, last week I threw a dinner party for 8 and a romantic dinner for the special lady mentioned above, but I would like to keep home tidier so that I can also entertain more guests.

4) To lose weight: I am setting myself a goal to reach by my 30th birthday in late June - I think the combination of dietary responsibility and also increased exercise should help - and as long as I cut down on the alcohol I reckon I should do it. Once the target is achieved I then have to keep the weight off.

5) To budget better: I am a boom/bust kind of person - I work hard but am tardy in reclaiming money due to me from customers - this is something that probably costs me a lot - so this year I am intending to bill for smaller amounts, but a lot more frequently.

6) To drink more water: Whilst WC Fields might have advocated not drinking water, due to it being a piscine spawning ground, I realise that I need to drink more liquids. Having knocked a hardcore caffeine habit on the head, I intend to drink more water to ensure that I am more alert.

Above all I intend to enjoy life! Let's see how long these resolutions last!

Summary: positive goals, but attainable ones...
