Advantages: There may be none but its worth a try

Disadvantages: cant see how there could be any!

Thinking back many years ago I can always remember my gran and her new years resolutions, she would make a list every year which she fully intended sticking to and quite often did. It seems in those days (mid 80`s) people really saw the new year as a new start where now we all probably see it more as another day but one that comes with a good excuse to get drunk!

I have to admit I have never been one for new years resolutions in the past, when my gran was alive and making hers I was only a kid and didn't really have anything that needed changing so that time passed me by and as I grew older with the whole thing being forgotten about by most and my old gran gone (god rest her soul) it was a thing I just never did.

This year though I have decided to change all that, I feel there's things from last year that could be improved on and what better time to announce my intentions to do so. Too many people sit about on old year's night telling tales of how bad the old year has been and hoping the New Year brings better times and happiness with it but surely a lot of what we get from the New Year will be down to ourselves and what we make it.

As a family man myself now with two young kids (a 5 year old son and a 7 month old daughter) I feel there's so much more we as a family could get from life if we just go out and grab it. Last year was the first year since my son was born that we didn't totally focus on him and try to do as much different things with him as possible this was of course down to my fiancées pregnancy and the planning for our baby daughter. Now that our daughter is here and things are somewhat back to normal my first resolution will be to focus on giving my kids everything we can in the New Year. Luckily financially we can afford a couple of holidays and still be able to look forward to weekends away and days out so I will be trying to stick to this resolution and spend more time doing family times and less time working (being self employed I can make that happen).

My second resolution for 2008 will again be family orientated. Having given up smoking at the birth of my son I have since gained about two stone in weight. Although I mainly gave up smoking because I didn't want to be smoking around him I also done it for health reasons, I didn't want my son and any other kids we had to loose their dad early because he chose to be a smoker. It is clear now that being over weight and not eating healthy could also land you in an early grave so my second resolution will be to loose the extra weight I have gained and to try to keep myself as healthy as possible for both mine and my family's sake.

Two resolutions might not seem like much to some but it will seem like two too many to most but I for the first time have made these two resolutions which are both sensible and achievable with every intention of sticking to them. I think the whole festive period has changed greatly and not for the better, Christmas has been very commercialised for a good long time now but it just keeps getting worse it has almost lost all of its tradition and when you think about it resolutions have been a long standing tradition at new year and they too are fading fast.

If you can make a resolution to do some good for yourself and or for others then it must surely be worth while and when better to start than at the beginning of a brand new year. So instead of sitting wishing the New Year to bring you better things or more happiness go out and make it happen!

I may update this review with my progress but I may be too embarrased.

I only ever have one resolution each year: keep on doing what I'm doing!

A suggestion on the weight loss front: cut out lunch. It worked for me. I lost a stone. It saved me a lot of money as well. Instead of lunch I went out for a 20 minute run.

I think your resolutions are ones that most families should think about. Putting a family first is very important and keeping healthy is something we all need to think about for the future.

Hope everything goes well for you and your family.
