Advantages: Seeing results through dedication

Disadvantages: Giving up too easily

I've always been against new years resolutions myself as generally it's just something you say on new years even when you've had one too many sambuca shots at the bar & are bound to fail however my opinion has changed slightly over the last year mainly because of the job I do I get a lot of people coming to me for advice on how to lose weight & get themselves into shape so thought id go against popular opinion & say that new years resolutions can work. I better clarify that I'm actually a personal trainer not one of those people who claim they can help you lose weight by hypnotising you or just by plain magic because as sceptical as I am about it, it may actually work however I think it's more rewarding doing it the old fashioned way, through hard work, perseverance & eating right.

I wasn't planning on writing this but I've read a few of the other reviews about new years resolutions & the majority of them seem to be concerning weight issues so thought I might as well just write this down & if it helps then great.

First thing you've got to do & I'm sure most people will have heard this 1000 times is to really want to lose weight, it's all well & good saying it when you're with a group of mates & they ask you what your goal for the year is but it has to be something you're committed to doing & aren't going to back out of the minute it gets tough. There's only so much a trainer can do for you, some people find it helpful to get that push & as a trainer myself I've seen people get results much quicker but of course everyone's different & some will obviously prefer to do it at their own speed, in their own time, at their own house or at the gym with no distractions. Deciding to do it at home can be very difficult though especially with a busy lifestyle & or having kids to look after, you'll just get started & something will come up that will be more important & you'll put it off until tomorrow & you'll keep putting it off & eventually it will become a viscous circle. Another thing people tend to do is set themselves unattainable targets like losing 5 stone in a month, it just isn't going to happen. It will take time but if you persevere it will happen I promise you! You've got to set yourself targets that are realistic like losing a couple of pounds a week, it doesn't sound a lot but it all adds up & I guarantee that you will see start to see results sooner than you realise.

If you can afford it I highly recommend to get yourself a trainer if you are deadly serious about losing weight. I'm no nutritionist but I think everyone knows the basics of healthy eating so I wont go there now but if anyone wants some advice then feel free to send me a message if you want some tips on working out & I'll be happy to help as I've had to be a bit vague in this.

A definite no no is to focus on the scale too much. Weighing yourself about once a week will obviously help keep track of your progress but anymore is bad as you're not going to see any major results in a day or two & can be very off-putting when you see that you haven't lost as much as you thought you would have... this again leads back to not setting your goals too high.

In some cases it can be a good idea to bring someone along with you for support & to keep you motivated but the key is not to make this a regular thing as it can turn into a competition & if the other person starts losing weight quicker than you it can make you feel like you're not doing enough. People lose weight at different rates so don't be disheartened if you don't seem to be making progress as quickly as others may.

The worst thing you can do is give up. In my experience people tend to start like off bullet out of a gun, really pushing themselves then after a couple of weeks if they don't start seeing results they quit. The rule is to pace yourself, especially if you're not used to working out for prolonged periods of time.

If I notice that people found this review helpful then I'll add a bit more onto it when I can with different types of exercises for different body types but of course on here I can only be vague as I have no idea who's reading it but if you want some focused advice feel free to send me a message & I'll be happy to help.

Summary: Only try if you're really determined.
