Newport is the city in which I live, and Newport City Leisure Centre is the one of the main centres here.
It's situated right in the heart of Newport, close to local amneties including the bus station, shopping centre which is at the moment being 'done up' shall I say, with new shops being added, the new footbridge and train station.
The actual look of the centre is smart, and easy on the eye, it always looks clean and you will always see a cleaner wandering about with their mop and 'mind the wet floor signs' or their sweeping brush which is always a sign of good cleanliness and basic hygiene. It is quite 'modern', and quite a pleasant place to be. I have noticed there are not alot of signs or anything to point you in the direction you are looking to go though, so say you are looking for the gym, or any other room it always helps to ask the receptionists which are usually very helpful. The receptionists are the very first people you get to see when you walk into the centre at the main entrance. Another thing I admire in the centre is all the staff communicate well with their walkie talkies provided and attend to problems and enquiries promptly, a really good sign of good customer service in my opinion.
As with all Leisure Centres they provide many activities, clubs etc.
There of course is the main attraction, the swimming pool which has the big tube swirly slide, and the wave affect in the water which has to be turned on by somebody on poolside. When turned on every so often the water acts as waves, kids seem to love this. The excited screams of children echo through the centre when the waves are turned on.
They have a cafe serving hot meals and cold snacks such as sandwichs, vending machines providing snacks, hot and cold drinks, unisex changing rooms - they changed them last year, a bar, halls, Solutions Gym, Reception area and of course toilets.
In the reception area they provide many leaflets informing you of what is going on and when such as dance classes, martial arts classes, prices of the gym, party prices and what they offer.
The halls can be hired out and they have facilites for people to play football, badminton, basketball and netball, volleyball and squash. The halls are also for concerts and exhibitions and can hold over 2000 people. The halls are sometimes used for snooker too, perfect for any snooker fan, especially the local fans.
Meeting rooms can be hired to for buisnesses or even for clubs who just want to hold a meeting for whatever reason. I know this as my brother who attends Kung Fu classes in the centre sometimes has no lessons to go to because of gradings (exams). The instructors for the class have to mark the grades and decide whos passed etc so they usually hire a meeting room in the centre to do this.
There are several clubs to join for children and adults, which include Gym Club, Junior Kick Boxing, Trampolining, Tae Kwon Do, Adult Kick Boxing, Line Dancing, Kung Fu (which is what my 15year old brother attends every tuesday and thursday evening), Street Dance.
They don't just cater for adults and older children as hey have a softplay area for parents to take their children as well, this can also be booked for parties. The softplay area is avaiable on certain days of the week and you can find out the days in the leaflets provided on reception.
You can find out more about the centre and what they provide by Googling Newport Leisure Centre. Some parties etc you can enquire about online. You can't however ring a specific number to speak to somebody from Newport Leisure Centre instead you have to reach them via the Newport Contact Centre - They don't give you the direct number they put you through themselves instead.
Overall the centre can be a lovely place to go just to kickback and relax and enjoy a few activities that you may or may not do everyday. I like to sit up in the cafe with an ice cold drink and watch people swimming in the beautiful pool below. See by the seating area in the cafe there are huge windows instead of a wall and you can sit and watch people swimming and mucking about. I find water peaceful and relaxing to watch even with people messing about in it, so I do enjoy this. The pool itself in the centre can make a lovely few hours out, but it does get really busy during the school holidays and on Saturdays.
