Advantages: Keep you cat trim

Disadvantages: none

I’ve had my cat since it as was a kitten. In the early says you’re never concerned about the weight of your cat as they’re tiny little things with barely an inch of fat on them.

But in recent months I noticed my cat was getting a bit of a gut and needed to become a fat fighter.

The thing with cats is that a large chunk of their day to day life involves being curled up on the sofa asleep. So there is only a little bit of a window for exercise. As the owner it’s up to you to take the initiative and make you cat get physical.

A lot of it has to start with diet. I used to bow to the every whim of my cat and pour out some food every time it came yelping. It’s hard to resist those wide eyes when they’re looking at you but you must be strong. I’ve slowly moved my cat off a diet of biscuits and cat food and moved it more towards biscuits and the occasional bit of cat food. According to the vet this helps diet but also assists with a cat’s teeth. Eating dry food prevents a build of plaque on the teeth apparently.

When it comes to exercise I let my cat go out frequently, this is the only way they’ll get exercise and keep trim. As an owner you must have a responsibility toward your pet to give it the best possible life. Letting it sit around all day doing nothing is just shortening their lifespan.

A little tip I have for getting involved in cat’s exercise is to buy something that sends your cat into a frenzy and has then scrabbling around on the floor. For my cat its thin bark sticks that are normally used as part of furnishings. I’ve found that cats respond to the waving of these sticks in an amusing way. If you take time out and wave it around you’ll find your cat jumping and running to catch the stick. If you pull it away at the right moment then they won’t give up. I’ve found this gives my cat a pretty good workout and by the end of it it’ll sprawl out on the floor panting. But it has worked and my cat looks a lot slimmer.

If you need advice on helping your cat maintain a healthy lifestyle then I’d recommend going to your local pet store and asking for advice, or there are quite a few books out there.

So there you have it, get your cat to become a fat fighter in no time.
