Advantages: Shorter NHS waiting lists.
Disadvantages: There may be too many organs
I believe that the system that the NHS uses to get its donations of body parts needs to be changed. Am I right in saying that some body parts are rare, which leads to peole either waiting helplessly on NHS waiting lists, or dying without having the chance for a transplant. At present the government has the opt-in system, which means that people have to say they want their organs taken away and used for either transplants or medical science experiments. What I believe should happen is there should be a opt-out system, where people carry a card to tell people that they don't want their organs taken out when they die. I believe that this scheme works well in Belguim, and many other countries around the world. I do believe that it is wrong to take body parts without consent, but if people would only carry cards or discuss it with their family, so other people don't have to suffer. But for those who could not carry a donor card; i.e. kids, mentally handicapped people. I believe that decisions should be made by thir families, and yes understandably it'll be hard but surely parents might feel a bit better knowing that their little child's death may mean 5 others children could live a fairly normal life.

- 18/02/01 Good point - but how would this work for people uncapable of speaking up to "opt out" such as children, those with certain learning disabilities that prevents them from being able to tell us what they want, and from those who are confused?
I agree that we need to increase the amounts of donations that are being given, but opt out schemes might not be a fool proof answer to this. |
