Advantages: safer roads

Disadvantages: more old people walking

As a taxi driver I see a lot of other peoples driving style. Some good some bad and some bloody awful. By far the worst has got to be the older generation.
You see them driving down the road totally oblivious to all around them, it's like they are a law into themselves.
Personally I think that once you get to retirement age you should have to take some kind of tests, I don't mean a full driving test(no-one could pass that twice), just something to show that they are still capable of driving to a reasonable level. Once every 2 years would be often enough.
This would then weed out them that aren't capable and make the roads a little bit safer for everybody else.Surely it makes sense when you see these people who can just about walk getting into big powerful cars and then driving them round very slowly because they can't see properly.
Test them or retire them, one or the other please.

There are good and bad drivers in all age groups - is it right to single one group out on the basis of age?

All drivers should have regular 'mini' tests - any one person's ability can change due to many reasons. For example, many people do not have regular eye tests - there must be lots of drivers out there with deterioriating eyesight, causing goodness knows what kind of havoc!

It seems common sense to test drivers over the age of 65, perhaps they could be made to drive along the motorway and see if they use any lane other than the centre one!

Well as a Taxi driver you would see lots of different styles of driving. I did notice you have not mentioned the style in which taxi drivers drive. On a tight schedule they always seem to break the speed limit, so one out weighs the other the old go slow and the taxi drivers go fast. After a night on the beer the last thing I want is to give it all to the taxi driver on the way home. Only Kidding, yea the older generation do seem to go slower and maybe they should sit another test even if it is a thorough check up not a quick look over.
