Land of hope and glory Mother of the free How shall we extol thee Who is born of thee Wider then and wider Shall our bounds be set God who made thee mighty Make thee mightier yet Whenever I here the words to what should be our national anthem I feel proud to be British. These words are perhaps jingoistic but they express a pride in our country. It upset me when they were removed from the last night of the proms as I felt our traditions were being eroded by external influences. I am proud to be British not because of the words of a song. I am proud to be British because I belong to the greatest nation on earth. In my country there are people of every creed and nation. These people are welcomed with open arms by many of us. These people are welcome because we are a generous nation. We are willing to share our good fortune with others. Britain is a wealthy nation. Even the poorest of us have enough to eat and drink and shelter available. We are not selfish with our wealth. Donations to charities are considerable over the year. When there is need people are willing to give. When we here of war and famine our purses are opened and we give. When we here of poverty on a grand scale we want to do what we can to stop it. The campaign to brake the chains of debt was supported by many people. We are willing to defend other nations. Our armed forces do a wonderful job in many areas of conflict. They help to provide humanitarian help. They help to restore the infrastructure of other people. Britain is a beautiful country. If you take time to look around the country you can see lakes, hills, seaside so much of it unspoilt. Because these are small islands we can get to any part of our nation in a very short time. Our infrastructure is excellent. I am sure we could do with more money spent on health, education, transport and a host of other issues but we do have a gr
eat health service which is free to all who need it. We have a great education system, free education to the age of 18 and if you are willing to learn you can gain much from it. Public transport is great in other areas of the country I can catch buses when I want at not too great a cost. We can travel around the country by train, plane and cars. The roads are well built and well maintained on the whole. I belong to a great nation. I am proud to be British and if I felt that the British nation was going to be eroded. I would do every thing in my power to defend it. In responce to the questions asked about patriotism I am giving you my opinions. I am sure not every one will agree but we all have a right to an opinion in my country. Is patriotism an out of date concept in todays society? No way it is important to feel part of something. It can be a county, a country, a continent or part of the world. I feel I belong to britain, not just one part of it but the whole of britain, I love my country and feel patriotic towards it. How far should we go to stay loyal to our country, and what, if anything, does it mean to do so? I would not go to war, but I would not leave my country to live elsewhere. I belong here Do you dislike visiting or praising foreign countries? As much as I love britain I do think other countries have a lot to offer. We live in a diverse world and no country has every thing. I like to visit other countrys, I like to enjoy what they have to offer but I also like to come home. Do you argue with foreign friends over the matter? No How do you feel about your country during sporting competions? I have no interest in sport and so pay no attention to sports fixtures. What are your views on EU and one huge united nation? I like to belong to a small country but I am sure europe has a lot to offer us as affiliated members. Would this bring us
closer to world peace? I doubt it. People will still have differences and want to settle them with war.

- 19/10/01 Yeah, that would be a much better national anthem since the Queen is very much saved! Good op. |

- 17/10/01 Nice of you to avoid all the points I made in your comment. Well done. |

- 15/10/01 Sorry kfingleton but I could never want to live in Japan as the geology of Japan is less settled, the weather is more extreme and the people are not the same as the British people.
