There's an alarming trend in the modern day game for players to dispense with the good old fashioned black leather boots which have stood us in good stead for the last 150 years. The craze was started back in the early 1970's when first Alan Ball and then Terry Cooper opted for showy white footwear, but those particular revolutionaries would have been well and truly astounded by the rainbow of colours which you can find on show every Saturday at the bigger grounds - red, green, brown, silver, gold - the lost is pretty endless. Despair is the only word for what i felt when Robert Pires came crashing to the ground after vaulting a tackle in the Newcastle game last season. He had been consistently inspirational, weaving his magic from midfield and scoring a bevy of sublime goals. But! with his cruciate ligament "in tatters" (as the redtops would say) it seemed as if our quest for the Championship might have gone out of the window. He is a really good player and he plays for a good team that are currently in the premiership. He has got a left leg and a right leg and so he is able to use both his right foot and his left foot when he plays football. He must know what he is doing because if he didn’t, he wouldn’t be playing football. He can also use his head, which is something not many people can say because if they use their head, it hurts them and they start crying and it becomes a disadvantage to them in the match. I think this player will have a good season and I hope he scores a lot of goals because he is probably in my dream team. ... Read the complete review

With the exception of Frank Leboeuf, there isn't a bad player in the French national team. Pires is a key player for them as well as Arsenal. He plays on the left wing replacing Marc Overmars, who himself was a quality player. Pires appears to outshine him though. Pires has stunning vision and great passing ability, as well as being able to tackle competently and shoot when required. He can beat players and cross the ball with accuracy for Henry. How England could do with a decent left winger. Pires beats Barmby and McManaman any day, and rivals Ryan Giggs in many respects. In conclusion, he is an extremely talented and valuable player, key to ... Read the complete review
