Playing in a band.

We have just finished school for the Christmas holidays and these were many moist eyes at our Christmas production.
One of the main attractions was our band a group of disables pupils playing carols. This band of children is not one that plays together all the time but one we formed for the Christmas production.

The instruments played by our band were Jingle bells, Shakers, a Tambourine, a wooden Guiro (percussion instrument). The songs they accompanied jingle bells, away in a manger, Mary’s boy child.

The pre-recorded CD played the tune that the band accompanied, the songs were sung sweetly but out of tune by the accompanying audience. The words were signed by our best signers, others fumbled with their fingers. The words were displayed on a screen above the bands heads we thought that would encourage the parents to join in.

The children sang their hearts out to the familiar Christmas songs.
The band played ,some slightly out of time. One boy strutting and posing on stage with his instrument, another sucking her hands and giving her shaker an occasional shake, the tambourine player played expertly.
The jingle bells got dropped several times.
The Guira scraped with expertise. We all enjoyed listening and the players enjoyed playing music to their parents.

These children felt proud to play the instruments in front of their families giving their confidence a boost. Playing musical instruments is good helps co-ordination. Playing in a music band helps our children learn working together skills. Music and sound patterns are good for helping the brain develop aids the development of speech. The rhythm helps maths skills patterns and timing.

Some of our non verbal children respond well to musical experiences. Music therapy is certainly worth investigating for children and disabled people as an aid. It can be used as a way of communication. Moods certainly change with different kids of music.

I have told you about my latest experience of listening to a band playing.

There are many types of music bands I have not played in a “professional” band but have listened to many bands playing... A progression to playing in the school band is playing in a “pop” band my hubby played in one when he was 16 unfortunately they did not get national recognition just played a few gigs for a youth club.
I have no other real experience of playing in a band but enjoy listening to a brass band occasionally and many other bands of different musicians.

If your child is musically talented encourage them to join the school band there are many benefits. If they and some friends form a pop /rock folk band encourage them guide them,. Who knows you may be parenting the next music stars

Summary: The band of musicians playing at my school

we do tend to forget in this world of corporate run "music = cash return" x-factor fixated people, the simple pleasure of being part of making music. And music as a form of stimulus or therapy is wonderful thing to behold and something people of all abilities can benefit from.
