Advantages: revolutionary console
Disadvantages: soon to be forgotten
The Playstation has become part of millions of peoples lives. It has captivated peoples imaginations and made the gaming industry almost it’s own. It has stood tall above the likes of the Sega Saturn and the Nintendo 64 and more recently the Sega Dreamcast. Never once has the system faulted or given way for any second hand Crap-boxes. It has, been almighty, and it has held it’s position with pride, never once admitting defeat. It has defeated the hordes and never once even come close to losing. (of course all of the above written aren’t meant in PHYISICAL terms, more in terms of being better then other consoles.) But now a new threat, well rather SEVERAL new threats have entered the field of play. Each has the capabilities of the PS, but the new enemies have something more. I suppose you could call it an extended personality, in that each is everything that the PS is, but ten times better. These threats are of course the PS2, The Gamecube and the X-Box. All of the mentioned will, I mean WILL take over the PS. And it is gong to be some time in the not so near future. Each console is going to eclipse the PS in ever yway and will be ten million times popular. I say WILL become more popular because, even though the PS2 is already out, there isn’t enough games or extras to push it to the top, quite yet. That is one of the reasons that the PS is top of the range, at least at this moment in time. The amount of amazing games that the Creators have designed and made for the PS, show what can and has been done to push the boundaries out and take the console to the extremes and throw it to the fore front of individual and multiple entertainment gaming/entertainments. Games like Resident Evil 3, Gran Turismo 2, Suikoden 2 and Final Fantasy 9, show how much the games industry has evolved since the debut titls of the games came out (which in Final Fantasys case, was about 7 years ago andon the NES!!). It also shows that the genres of the PS r
ange have expanded from the footie generation to the more diverse generation. Not only that but it also shows how far the Devlopers have improved, in the way they plan and program games, and how the game developers are using the new technology that is being developed, to their advantage. Then there is the accessories. The Analogue controller and the Steering wheel and pedal set amazed the crowds who awaited there release. They were revelutionary, and rightly so. Beforethat, the only special controller was the light gun (for the SNES). Both of the new controllers added a new dimension to PS gaming. (as if there was another one needed!!). Nowadays when something new comes out, the crowds just shrug it off as another bit of technology to look good with their PS’s.That to me is a shame, but at least people will be able to say that these accessories changed the way, they played their gaes. And rightly so. Another great accesserie which isn’t so widely known is the PS Hacker. This allows the gamer to play copied, Japanese AND American games on their European Playstation without getting their PS chipped. (although getting it chipped didn’t allow the gamer the ability to play Jap and American games.) Some of the down points to the PS (which I will put here just before my question and conclusion, because it is the only appropriate place I could think of.,) are , some of the games and some of the games that weren’t made…..i mean, some of the PS games are completely pants and not worth the five pounds that the uneducated gamer will pay for them, only to find out they are crap. They are the cheap games with crap graphics and no gameplay whatsoever. And the other point was the games that people feel should be put on the PS, but weren’t.One of these is Final Fantasy X, and another, Black and White. (which wasn’t even on a console, but on the pc.). Games like the two mentioned are what the gamers want to see, but obviously with
the PS2 out, the console the gamers are gonna buy, the developers aren’t going to make them for the PS, because it is lost buiseness to them, and that spoils it for lots…. ‘So if the PS is in danger of becoming extinct, and nothing more than a dusty doorstop, (as many consoles have, I.e : Sega Mega Drive, NES and Spectrum) then what can/do we do?’ The question I have raised (above) is a hard one to answer. What can we do? Of course doing something about it isn’t as simple as it sounds. I mean it is inevitable that the PS will fall by the wayside eventually, especially as technology develops at immense proportions and boundaries are broken and limits tested even more. Why is it happening so fats though? it is because we are living in the 21st century. Nothing is going to be the same after the new consoles are released with new features such as internet capabilites and the likes. I am guessing at this point, that there isn’t anything we CAN do and that is a saddening thought….of course the PS will always be a legendry console, purely because it took gaming to the furthest reaches of stardom and never went down without a fight….hopefully that legend stays for a long time….I am saying then…..that there isn’t a thing that can be done, and sooner or later the legend will fade away, only to become a memory in a dewy eyed old persons eyes……… and when that that day comes there is only one thing that I will be saying…… R.I.P Playstation……… (This took me a long time to perfect and I hope you can take the time to give me your views on the matter……..Michael).

- 23/08/01 An interesting review, of course the PSone won't completely die as it lives on thanks to PS2's ability to play PSone games. I've actually bought a couple of PSone titles to play on my PS2 so if anything PSone sales are boosted by the appearance of PS2! |
