Advantages: Save Money, Great Fun, Hours of entertainment
Disadvantages: NONE
Now I’ve been using the Playstation for over five year now and I can tell you that this console is one of the best around. I’m one of those people who brought the Playstation when it actually first came out. Yes I know your thinking what a mug to pay £299.99 for a box but I tell you one thing it was worth it. I have spent over several days over this console and have been playing many games to entertain my spare time. THE APPEAL ------------------- What the appeal was to me was the actual savings of money over arcade games that cost you around 50p a go. The games makers for this console caught up really quickly with the arcade technology and showed some stunning graphics with Grand Turismo 1 and 2, Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy series. I’ve always been a big kid who loves his game consoles, I have a few friends who are like me and are always visiting me for challenges. I started off with the popular Atari computer and still have all of them in tack and kept in good condition. Here a list of consoles owned by myself Atari 400, 800, 800 XL, ST 520, ST1040, SEGA MEGADRIVE, NINDENDEO SNES, 64 and of course the mighty Playstation. THE SPECIFICATIONS -------------------------------- This information is plaster all over the Internet so I had a look around and to point out some interesting facts. I have commented on the main power of the console, as people in 1997 did not expect a lot to happen with this console launched. (I hope this is interesting to you!) PSX Main CPU - MIPS RISC R3000A 33.8688 MHz rated at 33 Million Images Per Second, that does not compete with any other consoles during 1997. A Graphics Processing Unit or GPU features - Over 500,000 10x10 pixel flat shaded polygons per second. Graphical effects such as flat or goraud shading texture mapping, variable transparency rates and 4, 8 or 16 bit texture mapping. A resolution capacity of 256 x 224 to
640 x 480 pixels. And 15-bit range of 32 thousand colours or 24-bit range of over 16 million colours in any resolution. A Geometry Transform Engine or GTE with a processing speed of over 1.1 million polygons perspective transformed per second and capable of graphical effects such as hardware clipping, light souring, fogging, key framing, interpolation, vector calculations including rotation, translation and perspective transforms. A Sound Processing Unit or SPU with 24 channels, ADPCM encoding with samples stored in SPU RAM. A sample rate of up to 44.1 Kilohertz and audio effects such as hardware digital reverb, echo, delay, ADSR and CD audio playback. A Movie Decompression Engine or M-DEC with a specification of 9000 16 x 16 or 24 x 16 macro blocks per second with a processor rated at 80 Million Images Per Second. A dedicated motion JM-PEG decompression engine with a resolution of 320 x 240 at 30 frames per second, 640 x 240 at 15 frames per second or 640 x 480 at 7.5 frames per second at full screen in 16 or 24 bit colour. System Main DRAM: 2 megabytes. Video VRAM: 1-omega bytes. Sound RAM: 512 Kilobytes. System ROM: 512 kilobytes. CD buffer: 256 Kilobytes Instruction cache: 4 kilobytes. Data cache: 1 kilobyte. These tell you everything that you need to know what inside the unit but not many people will really care what things are inside. I have always wanted to know how computer works inside form such a young age, but was never able to get the full grasp of it. CONTROLLER -------------------- The controller has progressed so much over the year and that the button features have changed the most. All my earlier consoles only needed one button to complete all the actions but now a days they need much more. On the pad you’ve got around eight buttons which games designers can program to do different action within the games. The Design on the pad is
very ergonomic and covers all your hands needs. It is nicely curved to allow you to place your hands to controller and access the entire button with little effects. Later on in the year they launch the dual shock controller that had analogue control stick as well as vibrating pad that gave a great effect to a game. SOFTWARE ----------------- Till this date there are many game creators who still make great games for this console. Since the launch of Playstation 2 the game maker have not yet given up on the first console as there is so much power yet to be explored. The same thing is going to happen to the Playstation 2, as there is so much more yet to be discovered. They’re around thousand of titles available and yet there are more titles coming out. SERVICE ------------- I have to tell you about the service I got from Sony when my first ever Playstation that become faulty was replaced within no time. It is always a good idea to register your console so that the warranty can cover you for all faults. All I did was called Sony and told them that my screen flickering when playing games and they replaced it straight away. What a great company! I hope this reassure you when purchasing one. PRICE --------- The price of consoles has dropped rapidly since the new console has launched and the same thing will happen to the Playstation 2 as the year go on. I have no complaints about pricing of the console as at some point of time it does get cheaper. OVERALL --------------- As you all know that technology does change very quickly and that there will always be a new console available at some time. The one good thing they’ve done with the Playstation is made it smaller and portable to uses so you can play in the car. They’ve changed the name a little from Playstation to PSONE that brings it in line with it brother PS2. And what they’ve don
e with the PS2 is that they made sure it is backward compatible and that there is no need for any special devices. Unlike Nintendo and SEGA! I would recommend this product to anyone as it gives you hours of fun as well as saving money. I’m waiting to purchase the PS2 I’m planning to use my Dooyoo miles to buy one. I’ve entered so many competitions but I’ll just have to wait and earn my console the hard way. P.S There is one member on dooyoo who I will not name! (Begins with M) who keeps coming around my house to get beaten on smack down 2! HEHEHEHE!!!!! :0)
