Advantages: relatively cheap, still great console, variety of games
Disadvantages: not a PS2
Sony Playstation 2 is top of many people's shopping lists this Christmas - it boasts state-of-the-art graphics, a wide range of fantastic games and the best accessories around. Unfortunately, to get a decent package, you'll have to shell out over £200 - a lot of money in anyone's book. Furthermore, the best games cost between £39.99 and £49.99 so in order to enjoy your new Playstation, you're going to have to splash the cash. Thankfully, there is an alternative in the original PSOne. If you haven't already got one, I'd urge you to splash out on one, because it truly is an amazing console. I was lucky enough to get one several years ago, about one year after it was released and since then, I have had great enjoyment out of it, despite having a limited amount of games. You can get a Playstation for under £100, which is a very good deal compared to the price of a Playstation 2 or a new PC to play games on. However, on top of that, you should buy a Memory Card for around £10 and you'll also need some games. This is another bonus point of buying a PSOne. When I first got my console, games cost between £30 - £40 and I found it too much to be able to buy a lot of games. Now though, you can buy games for about £20, the same as PC games and it is therefore feasible to be able to build up a nice little collection of quality games without spending a barrowload of cash. Furthermore, there are several "classic" games now released on Platinum level, such as Gran Turismo, which you can get for £10 and this is a truly great deal. If I had to pick one combination to enhance your Playstation, I'd recommend you buy Gran Turismo and a vibrating "Dual Shock Controller" because this is a highly addictive combination. Obviously, if you've got the cash, you'd be well advised to splash out on a Playstation 2. But if you don't have the cash, or you're buying for a kid who's no
t quite old enough for their own PS2, then give the old Playstation a shot. Although it's slightly older, it's still a quality console and you can't go far wrong with it.
