Politics and Protest in General
Before I start a review on politics and protest in general, I must give you a little background information on myself and how I have been brought up. I am a born again Christian (Baptist Faith) who believes in God and in his Law. The Bible states that you should respect the law of the land and pray for it.
Because of this, I have been brought up to have faith in God and indeed in the various governments of the land and to do your best to help them in their role of governing the country. I believe that every person in the UK who is eligible to vote should do so as people have died getting that right and I for one appreciate it that we have the opportunity to vote for a government of the people’s choice. Therefore they are accountable (in some small way) to the general public and cannot rule the country however they want.
Having said all of that, I must express here my complete displeasure in politics in the UK at this time and in our current ruling party – New Labour (I should mention I suppose that I am a conservative and have supported them in previous elections).
I don’t know how many of you can think back to 1997 when a fresh faced Tony Blair won the 1997 General Election. The Theme Tune of the labour election campaign was “Things can only get better”, how wrong were they! Again thinking back to 1997, labour promised to be cleaner than clean (at least I think that was the phrase, or else it was Whiter than white, my memory has just left me), i.e. after all the various problems the Tories had with sleaze they came in with the promise that they would be different. Again how wrong were they!
I think that I should maybe look at this issue of sleaze again and how in my opinion the media especially have just not focussed on this enough. Let us start with Peter Mandelson, he has twice resigned from the cabinet, the first time over the Home Loan affair the second time after the Hinduja passport affair. Now you would expect that the first time he resigned that he would be finished with this labour government, but no they bring him back as Northern Ireland secretary where he then resigns a second time. Is his career finished now? No, Tony Blair manages to find him yet another job, this time as Commissioner for External Trade in Europe. According to the BBC on the 24 Nov 2006 his current salary is £153,109 per year. Is this correct?
Well who shall we consider now, how about John Prescott, not only does he have an affair in his office which would mean the sack for most public servants all that happens to him is that he lost his departmental brief position while keeping all of the benefits attached to that said same brief including his home at Dorneywood (which he later gave up due to the controversy surrounding him keeping it).
I cannot face talking about any of the other scandals that have happened, including David Blunkett who quit as home secretary after the visa scandal of his ex-lovers nanny. I would not be surprised if he did not yet come back into the cabinet at some point.
You then have the various issues of Cherie Blair and her personal trainer friend and the damage that did to Tony Blair’s reputation (although nothing was his fault or done wrong of course!!!!).
Now personally I have only picked out some of the many opportunities that I could list in regards to sleaze but really do not want to bore you any more on this one issue, after all there is so much more to consider.
The next issue that I would like to consider is TAX! Now if you can think back to the olden days when labour was last in power (and I know I am not that old at only 30, but it is clear from History) that labour has always been a party of Taxes. They seem to like Taxing everyone and where the money goes, who knows! Now I can understand the old theory of taxing the rich to give to the poor, but it seems that nowadays, Labour seem to tax the poor and give it to no one. According to the Tories website, council tax in the UK has gone up by 84 per cent since labour came in power (which if I check my own council tax bill does not seem to be that far off). Now I understand that Councils need to make money for their services, but I don’t think that I have seen a lot of improvements within my town despite the extra money they have! Indeed from what I gather a lot of it is wasted on new bureaucracy from the labour government.
Now I cannot bear to continue along this theme, except to say that I cannot wait until the next General Election so that I can vote against this government and I hope that everyone in this country will stand up and vote (I would of course like you to vote against labour, but that is your decision, but as a Tax Payer in this country, make certain that you vote so that you can say that you have made an impact in the decision as to who will be our next government, otherwise you really cannot complain at anything that they do!).
I was reading one of the other reviews that was written on here about this matter and would like to express my agreement with what was written, i.e. that it would be nice if a government would bring in someone experienced in management to be in their cabinets, i.e. a Businessman to run the economy, a Doctor / Health Worker to run the NHS etc. Not my idea, but what a great idea that would be, they know what is going on in the Industry and what is right and wrong with it.
This review is about politics and protest in general and think that I should therefore say a little something about protests etc.
In my opinion, the only protesting that should ever really be allowed is 100% peaceful protests, preferably by marching or standing in one place, which does not involve damage to or trespassing on any land or goods.
I cannot stand watching these protesters chain themselves to trees which have been designated to be removed by government law. We should respect the land and the law of the land and not break it, even as a protest. Take the various animal rights movements who have been involved in digging up relatives bodies, attacking people, etc. This is breaking the law and is not protesting but criminal activity and therefore the entire law of the land should be brought upon these protesters.
Equally when you hear of fishermen being attacked and their nets damaged my opinion again is that this is against the law and should not be allowed. These fishermen have a right to do their job and if they are breaking the law in any way then the various protesters should get proof and bring the power of the law upon the fishermen for example. Much better than protesting illegally and breaking the law yourself.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed reading this review and I look forward to reading your various comments.
Summary: Birng on a General Election and allow me to vote conservative

- 11/12/06 Agree, agree agree on many of your points.... especially about the heads of departments being run by people with the relevant skills..... there is so much wrong with politicians .... some are honest but most are just there to line their own pockets and earn a good superannuation...... not just in UK either..... good review |

- 11/12/06 I am not a conservative and am unlikely ever to become one, but I do believe the present Labour government is the worst I have experienced in my (quite long) lifetime. |

- 07/12/06 The point of protest is to raise awareness of a certain situation and to do that you have to get noticed by the media and that often calls for unlawful actions. The thing to bear in mind is which is more important the laws made by a small group of unaccountable law lords or the common held ethics and morality of the rest of us. John Papworth (Anglican vicar/political writer)put it succinctly when he said it was okay to shop lift from large corporate supermarkets because it maybe against the law but it isnt a sin as he sees it. If something is held to be immoral is it wrong to break the law to stand against it? In the words of Papworth "the good book says "love thy neighbour" it says nothing about loving Marks and Spensers" |
