Being a two person household (myself and my son) i am constanley amazed at the amount of black bags i put out every week for the council refuse collectors. Why is this, no its not that we are constantley eating and needing to feed the kitchen bin with our left overs , its the fact that what ever you seem to buy these days it comes burried in layers of assorted packaging materials. The traditional tin can was invented specifically for Napoleons army, but the tin-opener didn't come about for another 63 years, one of the reasons why the French army starved a lot. Hammers and chisels were used previous to that. They still are in my next door neighbors. The main reason why cans are used in shops, of course, is because they keep the food fresh for longer, baked beans lasting up to three years that way. If they were sold in plastic bags or tubs in supermarkets then I fear few would buy Heinz baked beans. These tins can survive nuclear blasts for Christ sake! I think that the answer is very simple and easy - YES there is too much packaging. I am sometimes overwhelmed how much packaging there is when I buy sweets or other products. These are not ony double but often triple or even more packaged. Which results in a lot of waste. And with global warming being such a hot topic these days one should consider buying those products. On the other hand imagine your celebrations just being in a container. A lot of people wouldn't like that as they think that this doesn't look nice, even if there would be people who don't mind.
