Advantages: Great player and great personality to match

Disadvantages: Never won Wimbledon

If Pat Rafter keeps to his decision to retire from the game of tennis at the end of this season, the game will not only lose one of it's most talents players, but also one of the nicest and down to earth guys on the tour.

Pat Rafter was born in Queensland, Australian in 1972, one of nine children. He turned pro in 1991. His style of serve-volley play is well suited to Wimbledon’s grass court surface, but Rafter has had no joy there, being runner up twice, including losing to Goran Ivanisevic this year in 5 sets. Pat has however won two singles grand slams, both at the US open in 1997 and 1998, as well as a doubles title in his home tournament the Australian open in 1999. Pat stands at 6ft 1, a big help to send down topspin serves before rushing in to the net to volley. Pat was the world number one for some time in the summer of 1999, and has been s good and consistent performer on all surfaces, a rare attribute in today’s game.

Pat will be remembered as a great player, but also for his genuine personality. Ivanisivic emotional reaction to his Wimbledon triumph, showed just how much the Wimbledon title means to all the players. I’m sorry that Pat never got to win Wimbledon, but has still has enjoyed a distinguished career. I wish him the best of luck in whatever he does when he does retire.

After he said ha was going to retire he said in a interview that he does not know yet and he still might play. I hope he does carry on because he is my favorite player and very talented

I think he is going to stick to his word. I agree it would be a big loss to the game.

I hope he doesn't retire. It will be such a loss to the game.
