“ This is a place, where you can post an opinion about a garage/mechanic which you would like to recommend, whether it be due to reliability, price, trustworthiness... „
Just had a guy from Chips Away to look at a "chip" on the bonnet of my car and was told they can't do that ."Now if it was a scuff or a scratch that would be no problem " Well what the hell are you calling your selves ChipsAway for ?Sugests i get a touch up stick and do it myself. If i could do it myself neatly i would not have called the so called experts.Arghh !
I took my car to HiQ Stafford as I noticed my MPG had gone down a little bit with no obvious reason, and the emissions were poor. Whilst sat in the waiting area, I noticed a sign in big letters "We promise we will never undertake un-necessary work. Ever"...very re-assuring!
I watched the 'mechanic' (possibly a school kid on work experience) get my car up on the ramp and start banging my exhaust pipes as hard as he could. He then stood and stared at it for 5 minutes, looking very confused, before having a chat with his boss.
He then came over to me and said the baffles had come loose, and therefore I'd need to middle & end part of the exhaust replacing at a cost of £185 plus VAT. As they didn't have the parts in stock, I said I'd come back in the next few days.
I popped into an independent battery, tyres and exhaust garage as somebody said they had heard back things about HiQ. The independent garage put the car back up on the ramps, inspected the exhaust and said that despite being 7 years old and the original, it was still in excellent condition.
The very slight noise coming from it when being banged by the technician was due to carbon deposits and other build up. The garage didn't charge me a penny and advised me to put some Reddex through the next few fuel tanks, which should sort it.
Try your local independent Tyre, Battery and Exhaust garage instead of HiQ.
After replacing the steering rack on my car, I proceeded down to Hiq to have the alignment done.
They said that there wasn't enough time to do the tracking but could take a look and tell me how off it was.
So when they put it on the ramp, they brought to my attention that the steering rack was a bit loose...
I asked if they would mind just doing the 2 bolts up (yes, just 2 bolts) and just a simple No.
I then asked if I could borrow a spanner (considering the car was right up in the air in front of me) the reply "No you don't work here"
So basically I had to drive the car back home on a loose steering rack because these incompetent cowboys wouldn't even do the 2 bolts up to make it safe to drive.
I will NOT be going there to get my tracking done now, to bad they've just lost out on £90, should of listened to people saying they were sh*te!
P.s I am going to post this review to every possible review site I can find...

My car broke down in my driveway and CMT came to my house for the repair, so I saved a tow charge ($75 or so?). He showed me the results of his diagnostics and explained what was necessary and how he came to that conclusion. CMT's prices are very competitive (factor in the tow and the overkill most shops do), and I am 100% sold on CMT.
Avoid in Gloucestershire
As with any other group or franchise it would be unhelpful to tar all with the same proverbial brush but at this time Chips Away in Gloucestershire needs to be avoided.
I had a visit at home following a promotion in the Stroud Sainsburys car park which led to a home visit the following Saturday morning to address various scratches for which a reasonable quote had been given.
The operator was punctual and well equipped and pointed out a very small scuff on the nearside of the front bumper which he could repair at the same time for a total of £100, so I gave the go ahead. He worked hard all morning in very hot temperatures and to my surprsie brought out all sorts of spraying equipment so hopes were high. Unfortunately the results did not live up to the ChipsAway promises. Yes the faint scrtaches had been polished out but the srpay job to the bumper looked like an amateur job with a spray can and alas I had to point this out to the repair man. He conceded it was not a good finish and said this was a result of the temperature and the paint drying too quickly. I paid nothing and he undertook to come back before I went on holiday the following Wednesday. He tuned up, by surprise on the following Tuesday, when the weather was at least as hot as the previous Saturday but told me he had discovered that it was a faulty batch of lacqueur that had been to blame as another job had gone wrong that week for a local lady.
He then spent the afternoon, into the early evening, with a large area masked off, and plenty of effort, clearly evidenced by perspiration.
The result was essentially no improvement, and just a larger area with no metallic fleck and an inadequate gloss finish.
Unwisely, I paid him for his efforts, the understanding being that he would get on to his "technical people" and come back to me to bring it up to a satisfactory condition. That was over a month ago, and suffice to say the car is booked in for tomorrow to have it brought up to a decent state as it is worse now than before Chips Away had a go at it. The quote for this remedial work is in the region of £200 but it will be carried out by PRH Repairs near Stonehouse in a ventilated, dust free workshop, by trained technicians who have always provided excellent service to date. So, all in all, a few lessons for me:
Go to the trained professionals with a proven track record
Appreciate that repairs to metallic paint require a base coat with lacquer
Don't part with money on the strength of assurances and promises, and
Enquire as to a repairers skill and experience before you let them loose on your car.
I would like to recommend T & J Autos in Swansea. Though this is a small company they don't waste your time or money. I had been to another big name garage for an MOT and was told that my car had failed and would cost £500 to repair. I went online and found T & J Autos and they fitted me in straight away. After a quick assessment they told me that I didn't need all of the work and that the little it did need would not cost anywhere near the other quote. They were friendly, helpful and effieicent. I would recommend this company to everyone.
I phoned chip away for them to come out and fix A dent and scratches on the panel of my car. They informed me that they had a guy who specialised in dents and that they would book him in to come to my house and carry out the repairs. The repairs were carried out and i was given a 2 year gurantee. However three months later the paint has begun to peel off and the scratches are once again visible.I foned chip away to tell them about this problem and that it needs repairing .They acted irresponsibly and stated that the guy who carried out the repairs does not work for them ,they dont know his number and that they are not liable for the repairs. I found this disgusting as they were blatently lying as it had been them who had passed my details forward for the repairs to be undertaken. They are a untrustworthy company, who i frankly believe should not offer a gurantee if they will not honour it.
I ordered some budget tyres through Hi Q online due to be fitted on a Saturday morning. The expected call the day before to arrange the fitting time never came so I phoned the fitting centre and they informed me they had recieved no order or tyres. I phoned the national helpline and was told the tyres had not been sent but were now being sent special delivery, the order had been faxed through and that the garage would call to arrange a fitting time on Saturday morning. It turns out the only part of my order that had been processed was the payment. The next morning as you have probably guessed, there was no phone call so I drove to the centre and no tyres had been delivered, the guy behind the counter told me the online stuff was nothing to do with them. I phoned the national helpline but found it was only open Mon-Fri. I was due to go on a long trip on the Saturday and had wanted the tyres replaced before I set off. Due to the fact that most of our local tyre dealers close for a half day on a Saturday I am left with the choice of either cancelling my trip or paying through the nose to have tyres fitted at short notice in the one dealer that remains open for the afternoon and then going through the hassle of getting my money back from HiQ when the tyres inevitably turn up next week. In short if you have plenty of time for messing around on the phone and do not need the tyres fitted by a specific date then Hi Q are good value for money. If however, like me, you find inefficency and incompetence infuriating then it's probably worth paying the bit extra and going elsewhere.
when my dad had trouble with his car , he deciced to use a mobile mechanic,he called, j6 rescue/mobile mechanic ,who i found on google.he came out and checked the car over and repaired it that very same day,his price was great and was really helpfull.since then my dad hasn't used a garage again , he has always used j6 rescue.i have passed his number onto my freinds and family and they have came back to me thanking me for giving his number to them as they was really pleased with his work and his prices. If you got a problem with your car call j6 rescue i would reccomened to all.
We used a company called MendMyCar, located in Great Barr. It is a new business but in association with a well established recovery company. Our car didn't start in the morning so the recovery driver suggested MendMyCar to us.I found the mechanics to be most helpful as they diagnosed the problem quickly. The car was even washed and had been cleaned inside. On the other hand, the manager informed me the business was new and as such required more investment in order to make it a success. He also informed me that it was difficult to find more work as it is a very competitive market.
I also use tyre mart for my motorbike tyres and have found them to be much cheaper than any other garage. I'de certainly give them a call for a quote before going anywhere else.
ChipsAway service all depends on what area and franchisee you get - some are better than others. I used the Farnham guy back in May 2006 and he did a great job, I can't fault the repair at all (I can't spot it anyway!). He charged me £100+VAT to repair a fairly deep scratch to the front offside wing of my metallic silver Peugeot 107 caused by my neighbours wall. Did the job in just over 3 hours in my work's car park (did the quote at home after work hours too, so much easier) and neither I or my colleague could spot the damage when he'd finished. Perfect colour match and even though they say ChipsAway doesn't paint to the edge of the panel, I can't see a line or anything. I'd definitely use him again (hopefully won't need to though!) so try and get a recommendation about your local ChipsAway if you're worried about the quality of service.
I have recently had 2 jobs performed on my wifes Nissan Micra and 1 on my Mondeo by a mobile mechanic called JS Auto Repairs in Southend On Sea.
The first was a full service. This was completed in front of my eyes and nothing on the service schedule was overlooked or not done. Even down to making sure the washers squirted onto the windscreen in the correct place. Bulbs were fitted free of charge, just the cost of the part to pay and wipers aswell. All over it was a very comprehensive service costing £110+VAT for the basic service including the service parts. The additional parts like wipers, which i knew to be not good and 3 bulbs which again i knew not to be working. He found a puncture in one of the tyres which he pointed out, but does not do tyres himself. Also the spare was flat and was duly inflated to the correct pressure, items that have been overlooked on previous services.
Second was the heater in the car. It would only work on full speed. After 10 minutes he found the problem, a blown transister board next to the heater blower. Nissan wanted over £100 for this part so the mechanic said "cobblers" to that and set about repairing it himself. After around 30 mins the board was back in and fans working fine!!! Saving me around £80 as he charged me £20 for repairing it, IE soldering a new connection.
My mondeo air conditioning system wasnt working and also i needed new keys for my car as i only had 1 key. Jason got 2 new keys cut and programmed them to the car with his laptop computer or whatever he used. Again i found this to be very professional. The air con system was just short of gas, so 30 minutes later it was charged and working like freezing cold.
I got a receipt printed directly from the little office in the back of his van which shows address and he is VAT registered so must be doing something right. I even offered to pay "Cash" so no VAT but he said he has to supply a VAT invoice for warranty purposes, IE if something goes wrong with what he has done. That way he can look up in his records and find the car and history straight away.
I have to say i got a far better from JS Auto Repairs than i have had from any other garage i have ever used, and boy have i used some!! I am not adverse to paying money for a job, nor am i adverse to paying more than i should, but i am adverse to paying for sub-standard workmanship, something which i can thankfully say was missing with JS Auto Repairs.
If anyone would like to look at their site it is www.jsautorepairs.co.uk
I recommend this garage highly. I live in Chingford Essex but the 30 minute drive to Great Dunmow is well worth it. This is a very professional and tidy looking garage and the staff are very friendly and helpful aswell. I was only charged £21 for an oil and filter change, other garages I asked quotes from were asking around £40 - £50!!! Tyremart also do a full service at a very good price too. I paid just £111 and was given the use of a courtesy car completely free of charge. My car was ready for collection as promised at 4pm and I was very pleased with service I recieved. Incidentally the last time I had my car MOT'd there in October it was just £24. Tyremart is a very genuine place in my opinion so if you live near the M11 and don't mind a drive up to Great Dunmow then I would definitley use them.
