Advantages: Trustworthy.
Disadvantages: None if you live in Blackburn.
Your car needs a service and MOT and maybe the odd repair and you can't find a garage that you can trust? You've heard so many tales about cowboy garages who tell you that you need a new "whatsit" when in fact you either don't or they say you do just to get more money off you. Incompetent or rogue mechanics are your recurring nightmare as you search the yellow pages. The best way to find a good garage is to ask for recommendations from friends that you can trust. The drunk in the pub saying, "Go to Joe's" is not to be trusted. That guy who lives just down the road from you who never tinkers with his car which at 10 years old seems to keep going on and on is the bloke to ask. Even if you don't know the person, knock on his door and ask where he gets his car serviced. You could even make a new friend. If you live in the Blackburn area I can recommend one garage that will not rip you off, will do a satisfactory job and will not cost you an arm and a leg. Lock Mill Service Station on Bolton Road next to Kwik Save is the place to go. Mick Eccles the proprietor of the petrol station and repair/MOT garage will give you a fairly accurate quote for what needs doing and will also ring you if anything turns up that needs doing with details of the cost and for permission to go ahead. I've even been happy to leave him to decided to replace brake shoes/pads if, although not worn right down, they were unlikely to last for the next twelve months. Seeing the old shoe/pads afterwards I had to agree with his decision. He wants you to come back so he treats you straight and satisfied customers do just that, again and again. Mick is a fully qualified mechanic himself so he is well qualified to judge if his staff are doing their job properly and will get his hands dirty if needed. He doesn't have a high turnover of his mechanics, the senior guy has been there for around ten year
s. I've been going to Mick's for nigh on twenty years with a variety of vehicles and only once have I had to go back and say that there is something wrong after a service and MOT. A new mechanic forgot to tighten a locking nut which threw the tracking out. The problem was put right immediately and the unevenly worn front tyres were replaced with new ones at the cost to me of just one new one. As my original tyres were about half worn I thought that it was a fair deal. On one occasion my clutch cable snapped and he sent a mechanic out with a car to tow me back to his garage to change the cable and didn't charge me a ridiculous towing fee. In fact I'm not sure if he actually charged me a towing fee. On another occasion my fan belt broke and he sent out a mechanic with a new one to replace it at the road side. The fee? The same as if I'd took the car to his garage. Just one word of caution, he doesn't do body repairs. However he does do just about all makes and models and always seems to be busy so will need a few days notice to book your car in for a job. In the case of a real emergency he will push you in somehow unless it's a major job.
