Advantages: quick (possibly too quick)
Disadvantages: no comebacks worthless guarentee
when i decided to use a mobile mechanic in the yellow pages(birmingham south east area) i ran accross a local mobile mechanic KEVIN HALL who i called and he gave a reasonable price for a new cam belt change £85. great job done in 30 mins new cam belt fitted only £85 pound lighter in the pocket but a small problem mr hall in his 30 minutes of haste had left a bolt floating around "or not fitted properly" in the cam belt area 1500 miles later it works itself loose gauging my cam belt. The R.A.C (who by the way were brilliant) towed me to the local lex autocentre ( they took one week to give me a price for a new cam belt and tensioning arm) they had to fit a new belt and tensioning arm at a pricy amount of £270.33 but to be fair at least with these guys you have got some comeback with the guarentee etc. when i spoke to MR HALL about this he just did not want to know he was trying to say to me that i probably played around with the cam belt myself! yeah right! after he fitted it(so his guarentee was not worth the paper it was written on)he just did not want to know.I am not sure if this guy has done somthing like this in the past to another motorist but my own experience of mr hall has been shocking to say the least and expensive..

sidneygee - 13/08/01 Sorry to learn of your experiences.
Bes t advice I can offer is to find a local 'Motor Engineer', with premises, who tell you exactly what they charge per hour. Prefreably use one that also carry out MOT's. This shows that they have invested capital in the business.
For each job on a car, there is a quoted time (which the main dealer should be able to tell you). Multiply that time by the hourly charge, add the cost of the parts, and you have a price for the job.
Although I do most jobs on the family cars, there are some that I cannot carry out, and this is where my local Motor Engineers help out (at £25 an hour).
The replacement steering rack for my Espace cost around £300, compared with almost £900 quoted by Renault (see my Espace op). |
