Advantages: Essential principles of religion are good.

Disadvantages: Twisted and warped interpretations of religion.

People are selfish.
Everything we do is for reward.
Some people do good to achieve that warm fuzzy feeling, some do it to impress their colleagues/friends.

Some people do it because they believe they will be rewarded multiply in a later life. This is a simple interpretation of religion.

Religion essentially is a good thing in my opinion. All major religions preach that we should respect our parents, give charity, help the elderly etc, all of which are considered good things.

However, the problem is that any religion, no matter how good, can always be twisted and deformed to provide ammunition to those whose sole aim in life is to cause havoc and badwill.

This is seen all over the world - from the bombings of abortion clinics by Christian right wingers in the US to Islamic terrorists wrecking the tube system in July 05.

These evil animals used the excuse of their religions and twisted parts of holy scriptures to suit their own crazy interpretations of life.

It could be argued that there is hardly ever a bombing carried out by an atheist - and there is generally more peace in atheistic countries - but at the same time, it is generally agreed that the world was a better place 50 years ago, when religion was much more prevalent in society.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that the system of religion is very easy to abuse by almost anyone, and it is this which is the root of the problem.

Summary: The idea is good, the system is open to abuse
