Advantages: Morals and values.
Disadvantages: War and terrosim.
Personally I neither agree or disagree with religion, however I can admit that it has both a useful purpose in society and a much less useful infulence in extremism.
Religion is the base from which most universal norms and values are drawn and so in this it serves a useful and good purpose. Many children will find that throughtout their school life and childhood years, religoius values and princeples will be taught to them, even if the religion is not accepted as a main faith. Many people will agree that in school they were preached to, or had regular school assembly's in which hyms were sung, as well as this many people are well aware of aesops fables, which have religious roots. Most Religions effectivley act as a social constraint, which prevents most poeple from acting immorally.
Religion also is a controversial and sensitive subject, form which many debates arguements and even wars can stem. There is no doubt that religion has played a huge part in wars and history, the holy wars and the holocaust are two main highlights of this. However as time moves on and culture becomes more diverse more religions are prevelent, which can lead to more conflict. It would seem that the biggest arguement or atleast the most used is the one involving terrorism and extremism. Although many peopel seem unaware that these fomrs of extremism have always exsisted, but only recently have gained press and infamy. The majority of followers of the more "extreme" or devout religions beleive in peace anyway, as thier religion teaches them to.
Whilst reading thorugh other reviews came across a comment saying "religion is for the weak". I disagree, i believe it takes courage and character to step outside the logical and scientific world and have faith in something for which there is no proof, and which is criticised alot.
I myself am an aethiest but feel no desire to crush other people's views. Personally i see no difference in faith, fate or destiny, however i accept that it is fair for some people to need to belive in something.
Summary: Serves purpose? Encourage war?

collingwood21 - 21.05.08 You might find it interesting to read Richard Dawkins' "the God delusion" for an intelligent perspective on religion - although I find you have to take some things he says with a pinch of salt! |
