Advantages: Gives Some People Comfort

Disadvantages: Gives Others Grief and Misery

I'm not a fan of religion at all. I don't want to offend anyone but I hope that in the same way I go about respecting everyone else's beliefs on a daily basis, religious people will respect my beliefs.

I think what bothers me first and foremost is that it's blatantly obvious that there cannot be seventeen different 'true' religions. So if no-one has any proof that their chosen religion is real and the others are wrong, how can people so firmly believe in their chosen religions?

It also bothers me that some people so firmly believe in things that were written hundreds of years after the real life events in them supposedly took place. I mean you wouldn't call that a reliable source by modern standards would you? So why do we not question it when it comes to religion? I mean surely the bible is just an early attempt at scientific explanation? A guide intended for use by early monarchy to control their people? Similar can be suggested for religious books from other countries.

Beside the fact I just can't see an ounce of truth in religion, I also note it's been the cause of about a thousand wars not to mention mass poverty, sexism and homophobia. I appreciate that wars will happen no matter what but I do think that sexism and homophobia in particular have been fuelled by religion to a great extent. Being gay is something men and women have been for thousands of years but while religion was at its most dominant it was almost unheard of for such a thing to be publicly acceptable. In America they're still backwards in some places with regards to treating gay people the same as heterosexual ones on the grounds they're sinners.

Women got a raw end of the deal from the bible and the Koran in particular. I know it sounds like a great idea to us men in jest to think of women as our servants but we don't tolerate enslaving people in this day and age just because they're black so we shouldn't do it to women either. This is an especially sensitive topic for me because my wife's Dad was a Christian man to the letter and this meant that my wife was treated as being below her brothers throughout her childhood. It's not my place to elaborate on that though.

I appreciate there are many different extremes to how much a person commits to their religion, but surely you either believe or you don't? And if you do believe, why do you think it is okay to pick and choose which bits you believe in? It always makes laugh when I hear things about women or gay vicars. I mean either you believe in the bible, in which case women and gay people are sinners and shouldn't be given such a position, or you don't in, which case you still shouldn't be a vicar because a vicar is supposed to be 100% committed to the bible they're preaching to others out of.

Then of course there are things like the rogue Shi'ites who do whole heartedly believe in their religion being the one true religion. I mean credit where credit's due - at least they have courage to back up their convictions. This doesn't apply to all Shi'ite Muslims by the way, just the ones that bomb people for not sharing their beliefs.

Religion causes arguments basically, that's why I don't like it. I can see that in some ways it benefits a few people because they believe they'll somehow get a reward in another life for their good work in this one. Or perhaps they just need that sense of purpose from believing they're serving some god or other. But I still can't see any kind of evidence to suggest any of it has any real truth in it. If there was a god, I'm quite sure he'd have been down to earth to give the lot of us a right good talking to by now. He hasn't, and most of the people who claim to have seen him have since either died or been sectioned, so I can't see how anyone can truly believe in something based on hearsay from a thousand year old book.

I just hope that someday, someone unearths the truth about the origins of religion and puts an end to all this nonsense.

Summary: There's more evidence to say it's all crock than to the contrary!

My philosophy is that i try and endeavour to be a good man because i choose to not because any god tells me too. As long as the way i conduct myself does nobody else any harm then it matters not that i am without religion
