God is black. God is a woman. God is a DJ. Jesus was an egyptian. Opinions such as these have been thrust at me and I recoil screaming WHO CARES ABOUT IMAGE?

We don't have any real idea what Jesus looked like or was like as a person (despite the recent claims that our scientists can reconstruct his face and Joseph's)and it doesn't matter because God; Jesus; the whole biblical cast are more important as ideas and metaphors than as people, whether you believe in them or not.

Just as Jesus uses stories in the bible to portray meaning, rather than by way of saying they actually happened, so can we take the characters to portray meaning.

My stepdad spends much of his spare time reading books about the "real" Jesus and his history or family, but I really can't see the attraction. Such biographical details seem to me to pale into insignificance beside the deeper religious meaning.
