Advantages: Amazing once realisation hits
Disadvantages: Too many rubbish spokespeople for it
What most of you are against, judging by your opinions, are the spokespeople of religion rather than religion itself. I too, would be totally against God if all I had to go on was what some so-called agents of God say and do. I think that if you look deeper into the philosophies of all religions God is explained in great and logical detail. We just need to learn the language of religion to understand it. To look at religion, at God, it is important to look further than just the skin level of it. A quick dismissive glance and then to dump it does God a disservice. I would suggest that anyone interested in trying to understand what and why so many people believe in something that appears (at first) to be such an incredulous thing, (that there may be a God) that you read some of C. S. Lewis's books on Christianity. He approaches God and Jesus in a very analytical and logical way. Another good writer on God is Paul Yancy. Again someone who translates religion into a format that is far easier to read than the bible. They look a little deeper into the matter without being pompous, arrogant or patronising. Finally, something that always makes me realise that we need to learn to think differently when thinking of God: A man is shipwrecked and is clinging for dear life to a plank of wood in the middle of the sea, praying his head off to God to come and save him. A plane passes and drops a rope-ladder down to this man to haul himself up by. "Its alright, I don't need your help, God will help me" He waves the plane away and continues with his frantic praying. A helicopter passes next and a man swings down, ready to grab our shipwrecked friends arms to pull him up. Again the man declines, shouting "Don't worry about me, God will hear my prayers and will rescue me soon". What an amazing show of true faith. Finally, a boat passes by and the
captain throws the man a rubber ring, ready to pull him into the boat. "No, no, God is about to rescue me, I have prayed and have faith in him" Cries our man. He drowns, dies and finds himself in Gods house. He gazes incredulously at God and in amazement asks "Why, oh why did you not save me while I was drowning in the sea Oh my God? I prayed and prayed, I put all my faith into you to rescue me. You are a cruel and hateful..." "Hang on, hang on!" God says in a very hurt voice "First I sent you a plane, then a helicopter, finally a boat...

- 18/06/01 You're very right. God is not the religion itself and has nothing to do with the actions of the so-called agents of religion. According to what I read in "In The Company of My God," purportedly excerpts from a book written by God Himself, religion is just an instrument to attract people to the consciousness of God's existence. But the rituals and the system of all religions don't matter at all because God is not the religion but the ultimate end of religion. Nice op there... Alex |
