Religion; faith, belief, trust etc. Every religion is based on faith, which means if you don’t believe then it’s not there, or it’s not real to you anyway. A lot of people follow the same religion together and some may follow a more rare religion on their own. I believe there may even be a Jedi Knight religion now, but what matters is faith and not paperwork. If 10,000 people declared their religion was jacking up heroin ( I don’t think any paperwork declaring this would appear ) then would you acknowledge it as a religion? Although sadly, some people do – it’s not really anything you’d want to share with others is it? I personally do not have faith in heroin. I believe that the main aim of any religion is: 1) To worship a particular God, object, idol etc 2) To give you guidelines/rules to live by 3) To make you happy. I feel I should expand on no.3. I believe that each religion seems to have some sort of reward or benefit from following that particular religion. Christianity has a nice place called heaven and a horrible place called hell. Now surely this would make you happy if you were a Christian because you knew you were going to heaven. Hope and faith is what it boils down to at the end of the day, some people have none and others like my parents have too much. I do not think that one religion is wrong and one is right, all I do believe is that if you are happy then there is nothing wrong with what you are doing. Here’s my experience then: My mum has been a Christian for quite a long time now. I used to go to church with her but I stopped. She is an amazing lady, she is always helping people out and has eternal love and ALWAYS forgives me for anything which is quite amazing. Over the years I have put her through it all, drink, drugs, leaving home, getting stranded in random places etc. Looking back, it must have been awful for her
but she still loves me and can put anything in the past. She has always tried to get me to believe in Christianity. And I have done from time to time, but faith is not something that you can hold on to, it comes and goes depending on yourself and certain situations. In July ’97 I went to a Christian camp called Faith camp. It’s a week staying in tents and doing various fun activities, listening to seminars and times of worship. But it was quite fun, there are about 3000 people that go and the music quality of some of the bands was good enough to get into the charts. It had everyone dancing anyway. Well, during this week I listened to people speak who used to be drug addicts and had managed to find a faith that had made them so happy. Now these people really were happy, there was something “special” about them that you couldn’t put your finger on. They had no family, no parents, had been abused or raped but had managed to find this faith. This amazed me and I grew interested. I watched people get healed and started to pray. I felt a whole change in my attitude towards life. I felt happy inside and out and was suddenly concerned for everyone’s well-being. I’m not going to preach but it was cool. Something happened after that and I rebelled or lost my faith. Christians believe this is the devil trying to interfere with my relationship with God but I don’t know. At the moment I do not follow any religion, but I am happy. I have love for people and I know how to forgive. I think some religious guidelines are good to follow but like I said, faith comes and goes. All I’m trying to say is that each religion has mainly good intentions and it is worth giving it a try. There are so many questions that I would like the answer to but I know that no-one really knows. So we have to live by faith, whether it’s faith in your cat, your husband or clubbing like me it doesn’t
matter. I do truly believe that if you are happy then you will be alright. I don’t know what alright really means but I know it’s a good thing. So live life, don’t worry, and take care of the things that really matter to you...

- 17/06/01 I think a religion is only as good as the people that practice it. Compare the good that Christianity does today, with the 'Holy' Wars of previous centuries against Islam - even the 'internal' struggle between Catholics and Protestants - and all the suffering that they caused.
Good to see you're a happy person, with and without faith :-) |

- 17/06/01 I'm not sure that all religions do have good intentions or necessarily bring happiness. Anyway, an interesting opinion, may your good go with you - Kay |

- 17/06/01 Interesting opinion, I agree with you. :-) Happiness is more important than any particular theology. |
