What is religion? What place does it have in present day society? Is secularisation taking place? Are we living in a society where religion has no place? This is a subject that is very important to some, and has no importance in the mind of others. One definition of religion is that religion is a belief system, it is belief in a god. Basically a religion is a belief system held by a group of people. But in society there are also some beliefs that are called sects and cults. So what are they? There are hundreds of sects and cults around the world, so how can we be living in a secular society. There are so many belief systems in existence. So what does it mean that we are moving towards a secular society? Maybe it means that we are moving towards a society in which religion is not as important, but is this true of society today. There are five major religions of the world. Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity and Hinduism. Each of these religions has large followings and many are continuingly growing. Those who do not belong to any of these religions either consider themselves to be Atheists, or then are members of either a sect or cult. This makes the whole idea of religion quite important. A religion is a belief system. Marx said that religion is the opium of the people. What did he mean by that? That religion is a drug that keeps society intoxicated. Is this true of religion? In present day society we cannot give one answer to the question, how important religion is. It depends on the individual. Religion holds a different place in the heart of each individual and therefore the importance of religion is society today is different for each individual. Some people practise their religion, others don’t but still have a faith. Religion is something that will always exist, it does keep society under control in a way. It lays down rules, regulations that are in most cases good for society. We cannot say th
at we are living in a secular society because for every individual the importance of religion is different.

- 17/05/03 tas1, I feel that I could sit down and have a right good talk to you. Your questions are wonderful for getting to old grey matter working. Unfortunately it would need to be a two way conversation as there would have to be an exchange of views. Stiil you have got me thinking. Yet another thought provoking op.
