Advantages: It offers comfort, It gives you faith
Disadvantages: It creates conflict, Some people take it too far and force others to share their faith
I choose not to follow a certain religion, and I am happy with the way it is. However I am agnostic - I believe that there is something out there...I just don't quite know what. I have all the respect for all people - religious or not. I respect their choices and therefore I find it offensive when people straight-out put me down for not having a faith. I don't believe in God, but I do have a faith. I do believe - just not in anything as specific as organised religions. For me, religion is all about comfort - let me give you an example: During the times of the plague and other great epidemics, people replied heavily on religion. Although back in thsoe days people did really believe that they suffered because it was a punishment from god for their sins - many people did try to find logical solutions. But when they could not find a logical/scientific answer - what did they do? They turned to religion for help because there was no other way out. It offered them a sense of comfort and somehow, one way or another - protection. In truth, religion allows people to feel a sense of belonging - a group of people sharing the same beliefs is beautiful. But it can turn ugly. A lot of Global chaos all comes down to relgion - different faiths have different belifs, and therefore disagreements arise. They would die for what they believe in, they would kill for what they 'know'. It's one thing standing up for what you believe in, but it's quite another when you take drastic measures to force others to follow your faith. I don't believe in God - I don't believe in anything associated with God, but I do have faith. I believe that everything happens for a reason, but it is up to the individual person to fnd their own strength and pull themselves out of a sticky mess. I don't choose to call out to God for help - but I have no problem if you do. Which is why it p*sses me off when I am w
alking down the street on a sweet sunny day and a bible-preacher approaches me to fill me in with their religion. No matter how much I insist that I am not interested - they refuse to go away. Why? Why force another to share the same faith as you? A person will not have faith in something unless they choose to - forcing religion down one's throat will only make them gag.

- 21/06/02 I am agnostic too, and I hate it when people in the street feel that they have the right to shove their beliefs in your face. Religion is a personal issue and people should be allowed to choose what they want to believe, not have it crammed down their throats.
Brillia nt first op:-)

- 21/06/02 I'm Pagan and there is a general belief amongst Pagans that if Paganism is the correct spiritual path for an individual they will find it eventually. Converting people is generally frowned upon (although you of course get the odd twit). I do genuinely believe that a person will eventually find their own spiritual path whatever that may be. I don't think forcing your religion down peoples' throats will do anything except annoy them! My friend is an atheist, but has studied the Bible. She once invited Jehovah's Witnesses in and completely tore apart their arguments. They were desperate to leave by the end! |

- 20/06/02 You make a good point. If people did not try to press their religion on others there would be much less trouble in the world today. Welcome to dooyoo. |
