I have two cats who were born in a garden and were rescued by a woman who saw them in a cardboard box in a pub where there was a dog.
When they first came, they were very nervous, but now they are 3 years old and really friendly.
Cats make the best pets, because they don't rely on you as much as dogs, but they're still company. They can be really affecionate and they're like little hot water bottles! You should get a rescue cat, you often don't have to pay, just make a donation to the charity if you get them from one.
There are loads of unwanted cats out there, who need homes, so you should get a rescue cat if you can, you will be so glad you did, when you love them and treat them well and they love you back.
