... extremely interesting! I started my research on my fathers side. I knew a lot about my grandmother, as i was very close to her before she died. Every week, when i was little, she used to let me look through all the old photographs that she had kept . She explained to me who each person was, but i have forgotten over time, who some of them were. I could trace her mother and father very easily, as we still had their wedding certificate from 1901. I started to research her mother, who's maiden name was Tyzack. This did not...more

Premium Review Researching Your Family History: Who will you find in your family history!?? (1055 words)

I am a lover of history and had thought about starting to research my family tree for a long time. I started to research my family tree as my boss at the time had started to teach classes on the subject, and a group of us really started to attend the classes to give her some moral support, as this was her first class that she was to teach. My other half attended the classes with me, and we were both hooked from there!! Some of the information that was passed onto us on how to start with your family tree was invaluable. We started to research our family tree in 2007, so we are relatively new to the process, and have a long way to go! The best way to start ...  Read the complete review

I must preface this article by an apology that it is probably in a misleading place but unfortunately there is no suitable category in Speakers Corner and my attempts to post this under the General heading were foiled. Everytime I tried it would take me to my last review under that heading with an invite to update it! Therefore I gave up and searched out this heading - after all this is a little piece of my family history! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This week the two themes of Remembrance and Reconciliation have been on my mind. To explain why this is, I must return to the beginning of a story. It started years ago but the ...  Read the complete review

Researching family history is getting to be a popular hobby these days and with an ever growing list of genealogy websites being available it is getting even more popular. But don't start with the internet... Start with yourself! Note down important details about yourself (life events such as birthday, christening, marriage etc), before moving onto your parents and grandparents. After all, your family tree will start with you. You may already have descendants, but they'll also be an easier part of your family tree. Don't be afraid to ask questions! You never know what you might learn from parents and grandparents and remember, it's too ...  Read the complete review

RESEARCHING FAMILY HISTORY I first became interested in tracing my family history over 20 years ago, when both my parents were still alive. My mother’s grandfather had an Italian surname and she wanted to know more about him, so that is where we began. HOW TO START Having no experience of tracing family history I began by writing a letter to the local newspaper of the town where my gt grandfather had lived and asking if anyone could help. As the surname was unusual I thought there might be someone who could help. There was and I was lucky because the same day the letter appeared a man rang me and gave me lots of leads to go on ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Researching Your Family History: THE SECRETS OF THE LONG AGO FOLK (2307 words)

Family History Searching out The Secrets of The Long Ago Folk All the years I was growing up, my aunties and uncles on my dad’s side would comment on how much I looked like their mother. I remember being stopped in the street when I was 11 by an old woman who said, rather mysteriously, that I must be one of Isobella’s. I was at the age of being desperately shy and embarrassed at being stopped by old ladies in front of my sisters and cousins, and I think I giggled and walked away. As the years when past, I wished I had listened to the woman, and found out what she knew about my grandmother. You see, Granny Stuart was never spoken of in any detail. ...  Read the complete review
