Advantages: none
Disadvantages: makes driving less safe
Road Rage is a plague on Society and as such should be rooted out! How do you start with an opinion for which there are no advantages? Well I guess first of all I ought to state my position, which is simply that this sort of behaviour is quite unacceptable in a civilised society and should be discouraged. The problem with discouraging this behaviour is that it gets an undue amount of attention and publicity. Consequently ?Road Rage? then becomes an accepted or expected, though not acceptable, behaviour of within society. Even this opinion will to an extent ?dignify? this behaviour! However, this should not stop us discouraging this sort of crime. On the good side ?Road Rage? is still quite rare, but like many crimes that get unleashed upon Society if they left unchecked they spread uncontrollably. For some reason when many people get behind the wheel of a car they appear to turn more aggressive. The extent to which drivers show this aggression varies but can range from being discourteous at a junction to blatantly cutting someone up to assault. I have seen even the quietest person drive like an absolute maniac when behind the wheel! I have to say that I myself am not a perfect driver. Yes even I have had my own moments of aggression, however as I have grow-up I have come to recognise that I only want to get from A to B and preferably in one piece! So now I just relax when I?m driving, where possible I try to stick to the limits, this is sometimes tricky when some drivers follow you from a distance that can be measured in millimetres! More frequently I even give-way to my fellow drivers. From a control point of view, more police on the roads and more unmarked vehicles would help to dissuade such behaviour. In addition the courts need to hand down sentences that fit the crime. Finally to stamp out this crime will require the assistance of the General Public to ?name and shame? those that commit ?Ro
ad Rage?. I no longer feel safe when driving and always lock my doors as soon as I get in the car. This is possibly one of the reasons my driving style has changed. In conclusion I think that a lot of people forget that driving is not a right but a privelege. And we must acknowledge that every other driver is entitled to be on the road and to be treated with respect. To re-cycle an old phrase ?Treat other drivers in the manner you would like to be treated?.

- 09/01/01 I think every driver gets annoyed occasionally when driving, it's just the ones who go over the top that are a problem. I know what you mean about locking the door - better safe than sorry. |
