Advantages: Not a lot

Disadvantages: Plenty

I have often wondered why we have seen such an increase in road rage in the last ten years. I have several ideas why and these are just my opinion on the matter.

Centuries ago men did battle in suits of armour, a person was known by their plumage and the quality of the suit. Today we have cars and a person is known by their choice of vehicle and its price.

As with a suit of armour a car affords some protection and the illusion of safety, it also provides a space around the driver which is their space, space to shout if they want. I say illusion of safety because when two vehicles collide the safety factor is virtually nil at any speed over 25 m.p.h..

If a person is safely cocooned in their metal shield they may believe that they can say anything or even do anything without any repercussions. Like I say its an illusion.

The other reason for road rage is traffic. Imagine a scene where all the roads are empty, there is the occasional car but generally its just you driving along. Nothing to consider or negotiate but the road. This is easy. For any competent driver, I have described the idyllic driving experience.

Now switch to rush hour in Picadilly on a Friday evening. Its raining, cold dark and dreary and tonight all the Taxi drivers seem a little crazier than usual. You are in a hurry to get home as you have plans to go out in a couple of hours. Add to that a bus broken down on the inside lane and the radiator is leaking on your car. This is a recipe for road rage. One more thing might tip you over the edge.

Its the sheer volume of traffic that is the reason for this hassle and we know its going to get worse.

So whats the answer. Less traffic on the roads. But how, I don't know. John Prescott doesn't know either.
