Roads in the UK

Description: The Highways Agency's plans for 2002-03 will see £740m spent on road maintenance and £698m on major road schemes. Will ... more
Roads in the UK ... this increase in spending help improve state of Britain?s ever more congested roads? What do you suggest the Highways Agency do?

They're still angry that you whomped their Armada back in the days of yore, but thanks to their indolence and financial shortcomings, they haven't been able to do anything about it. But they've wanted to, and in the centuries since this great naval stigma they've just been stewing in a rage only augmented by their inability to take action. A Hamlet ... more

You know why British roads are so crappy? Because the Spaniards are sucking you dry! They're an inconsequential Mediterranean leech and they've wriggled themselved into your prosperous Anglo-Saxon blood stream, and they're augmenting their affluence at your expense. But you don't think British roads are crappy? They will be, by Jove! Take note of this... The British road system certainly isn't anything spectacular. And while it may not be entirely decrepit, not in a "beautiful downtown Grozny" sense, it's not going anywhere. It's sort of stagnated, and when things stagnate, they go nowhere but down. It's a fact ...  Read the complete review

... this is the road to hell. For me, this weekend is a pretty good time to be talking about British roads. You see I've just gone off to Brittany for a week's holiday with Mrs D and the dave27-ettes, which has involved a drive down the British road system from Preston to Poole in Dorset, a quick (or very slow, actually) ferry trip across the Channel to Cherbourg and then a four hour drive down to our cottage in Plusquellec. Now a trip like that requires a real man to face up to it, but it does give you a bloody good idea of the state of roads on both sides of the Channel, which is certainly an eye opener. We're regular ...  Read the complete review

I am 'fortunate' enough to live int he suburbs of the sprawling metropolis they call London. You know the old addage, streets paved with gold and all that.... Not the way I drive to work. It appears that in an effort to save money on the roads, the 4 boroughs that I drive through, have adopted a new speed reduction scheme that is a whole lot cheaper than speed humps. Welcome to the land of the 'speed crater'. Potholes everywhere... They are extemely effective at slowing you down. Speed craters require no maintenance and are naturally occurring on London roads. To confuse the motorist they are occassionally filled ...  Read the complete review

Many songwriters have used “ROADS” as their inspiration over the years. “The Road to Nowhere”, “The Road to Hell”, “Country Roads”, to name but a few. How the M25 can inspire anyone to write a song, I just do not know, but it is indeed a strange world in which we live. Talking of strange, regular dooyooers will recall that I moved to the county of Norfolk about 6 years ago to live, having been born and bred in Derbyshire. Although only 27, my wife and I were pleased to move to the countryside of Norfolk, so as to escape the rat-race lifestyle of Derby City Centre. Having spent 4 years commuting in and out of Derby, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Roads in the UK: We're on the road to nowhere... (542 words)

As Talking Heads once sung, we, in the uk, are on the road to nowhere or rather the road to somewhere via the roadworks. This has become the all too familiar site on our roads for far too long now. Do you remember the time that you would look in the road atlas as a child and see the broken hashed Motorways under construction? Look in there now and you will see no broken lines. However, if you venture out onto the road you will see plenty broken roads. Full of potholes, lifting tarmac, crumbling concrete and general worn out surfaces. This is because the government are all too keen to neglect public spending on roads. All to make themselves ...  Read the complete review
