Advantages: Just me having a rant!
Disadvantages: Nothing if you dont mind a good rant!
I recently read a review on Room 101 and it inspired me to have a rant of my own and ram some more stuff in!! (It must be getting hard to breathe in there by now!!!)
There are several things I could moan and rant about and if I was to put in everything that annoyed me (such as Zoe Ball - don't know why just can't stand the woman!! and people that appear on these programs that want to buy a 'place in the sun' somewhere they've never even been just coz their mate 'Tracey' went and said it was nice and then moan when they have no money and no friends and get hot and can't speak the language.......) but as I'm currently at work (yes supposedly working, just smile at the boss and he wont suspect a thing....) I'll limit it to just three:
1 - The Cilit Bang ads
Ok firstly, you must have all heard ‘Hi, I’m Barry Scott!’ shouting at you from the tv even when the volume is on low. Every time the advert comes on I have to turn over as I just can't bare to hear his annoying voice shouting at me about how clear my drains could be! I don’t really understand why he has to shout as it doesn't make the cleaner sound any more impressive! With a name like Cilit Bank, I actually thought it was a wind up to start with until it dawned on me that some bright spark had actually sat in his swivel chair in his office one day and thought to himself, ‘I know, I’ll invent a cleaner that’s basically the same as all the others but I’ll call it Cilit Bang, that’s really impressive! Throw in a really aggravating man who can’t act and just tell him to shout at the camera and hey presto – we have a tv commercial!’ I don't know why they just can't have a nice normal person talking in a normal voice at an acceptable decibel like all the other ads!!!
Throw him in Room 101 – Please! ‘Bang, and the Barry is gone!’
2 - Football Hooligans vs Police
Now, I do enjoy football myself and am a great spurs fan and of course also enjoy watching the world cup etc. I want to see my team/my country finally get their hands on a cup as much as the next person but for some reason that doesn't make me want to go to the country where the matches are being held, run around with my top off and hit eveybody in sight! (wouldn’t be a pretty sight either!)
I watched a documentary recently (possibly fuelled by the ‘disturbances’ at the Man U v Roma and Spurs v Seville games last month) - mainly focusing on the trouble in Germany in 2006. Most of the fans said that they go over there simply looking for a fight and if there aren't any riots etc while they are there then they feel like it is a wasted trip - even if England had won!! People like them really do annoy me because they end up ruining it for everybody and make it a bad experience for those wanting to go to show their support for their country. They can't be true fans or they would be interested in whether England win, not how many people they get to punch in the face. I think all these hooligans should be locked in Room 101, never allowed out, and then maybe football could go back to the friendly team sport that it should be - not a cause for pointless fights.
However, that being said, I do think a lot of England supporters get a lot of unjustified bad press. Yes there are the ‘idiots’ that I referred to above but I think a lot of the ‘agro’, as clearly shown in the EUFA Cup matches last month, is actually started elsewhere. I think it was very clear at the Man U v Roma game that there wouldn’t have been half as many injuries if it wasn’t for the police. They were clearly only attacking the Man U supporters after an uproar when the Roma supporters rammed the police’s Perspex barricade and the Man U fans reacted. It was then that the Man U fans that were seen as ‘hooligans’ and were portrayed in the press as ‘typical british football supporters’ and a ‘disgrace’ and an ‘embarrassment to England’. This was certainly unjustified and I think a majority of the problems like these could be sorted out with proper training of the police and implementing ‘non biased’ police in the grounds.
I read in the paper after the Spurs v Seville game that one Spurs fan was standing by the Spurs bus taking photos of the players on the bus. The Spurs players were happy for him to do this and were waving etc and three police men then proceeded in battering the fan to the ground, simply for taking photos resulting in two of the Spurs players jumping off the bus to help their supporter.
An absolute disgrace and in no way should situations like this be blamed on the ‘typical british’ when it has been shown over the recent years that this sort of thing is happening in lots of European grounds – there have been several cases of injuries, fights etc in the Roma ground alone over the past few years.
3 - Celebrity dancing/skating/singing/shoved on an island/left in jungle etc etc.
These programs are really getting on my nerves. When they started off, there was only a couple so it was ok but now they seem to be thinking of absolutely everything to try to get these celebrities to do (I'm sure there's going to be Celebrity Taxi Driving or Celebrity Postmen soon!). Whether it’s leaving them on an island, in a jungle, asking them to sing, skate, dance, act, cook or just leave them in a house for a few weeks to fend for themselves (god forbid – they actually have to cook their own food and wash themselves!) just to put something on TV!!! (and don’t get me started on the people out there that will actually watch every single one of them!!)
And most of the time they're not even celebrities! There will be the odd actor/actress that was in Eastenders/Coronation Street/Hollyoaks about 5 years ago but other than that, it just seems to be some woman who supposedly slept with David Beckham, some wife/husband of someone famous, Tom Jones' next door neighbours', cousin's dog, and they're called celebrities!! These reality tv shows is all that seems to be on at the moment and there seems to be a consistent battle now between ITV and BBC to get the most ratings – ‘Quick guys, BBC just got that bird that no-one has ever heard of to do a triple, somersaulting backflip on the ice – make our guy eat a kangaroo’s anus that will get our ratings up!!’.
And this is what I pay my TV License for tut tut!!!!
Thanks for reading!
