Advantages: None really.
Disadvantages: They annoy me terribly!
I admit it. I am easily wound up, it doesn't take a lot for me to be annoyed (ask my boyfriend, I almost started an argument in GBK on Sunday as the woman on the table next to me was talking so loud I couldn't concentrate on my own conversation!) There are lots of things that annoy me in everyday life, and living in London just adds to my problems. I am not saying this wouldn't happen elsewhere, but to me it just seems ten times worse! So here is my list of top grievances....
People Who Stand Too Close In Queues.
=============================
This is possibly my biggest pet hate. Like most people, I really hate my personal space being invaded by complete strangers. I can see how it is unavoidable on tubes, I don't like it, but it's necessary (luckily I bus to work in winter and cycle in the summer, otherwise I would arrive in a foul mood!) but when you are queuing for things...I get really frustrated when I can feel someones bag/chest/arms pretty much resting on my back. I always leave enough space for the person in front of me, so why does the person behind feel it necessary to squidge up as far as possible? Do they think they will get served quicker? I quite often make a point of looking behind me when I'm moving up the queue and leaving an extra big gap between me and the person in front so that if my personal space is invaded once again, I have extra room to move up slightly!
I think I'll stick to online shopping this year as the thought of doing this several times over on a Saturday might cause me to have a breakdown in public!
Work Water Stealers & Mug Takers
=========================
This will sound rather petty I suspect, but it just has to go on my list. I have a big Tigger mug that was bought for me and I use it at work as the mugs at work are, quite frankly, crap. Even though this mug has my name on it, someone in the office keeps on taking the mug and using it and I do not see it in the kitchen for weeks!
Even worse than this, is when I go to the work kitchen to make a cup of tea for me and my colleagues. I go through the motions of switching the kettle on and waiting for it to boil (I've usually got a round of 3-4 teas so it takes forever!) only for someone to come along and announce that they had just boiled it but had forgotten...they then take my water! I know, I know petty. But if they aren't there to fill their cups when they boiled it, why should I have to wait for a second time?
People Walking in Groups & Pushchairs
============================
I do also find it frustrating if I am walking on my own that a group of people walking towards me don't break up and walk single file for a second so that I do not have to get on the road and walk round them. Quite often I have had to do this and I find it so rude that I have often wanted to say something, why is it impossible for them do just let someone past who is walking towards them? Do they not see that the path is not big enough for all three of them to walk in a line as well as let one person go past that is walking towards them?! I also find this frustrating with pushchairs, but mainly because I feel that sometimes mothers & fathers with pushchairs think it is their right of way, so even if there are two mothers walking together, I STILL have to walk out on to the road to get round them!
The dressing room assistant in Primark
============================
Sorry to target just one person in particular, but this person really annoys me every time I even attempt to try something on. He ignores you when you are waiting to go into the fitting room, and when you finally give up and announce you have three items, he snatches the clothes from your hands and then thrusts them back at you, finally he angrily tells you that you must put the clothes back on the hangers. I do completely understand why this is - if anyone has seen the inside of this shops fitting room you will see that it is littered with hangers - but I do object to be spoken to like I am some delinquent teenager!
It is just as bad coming out of the changing room - the last time I went in there I had a jumper that was just folded on one of their shelves so it had no hanger. When I came out without a hanger, he told me that I would have to put it back myself as he had no where to hang it (the way he said it made me think it was my fault!)
I had no idea where I got it from so I said I didn't know, and that I would have to put it wherever I could place it, one of his colleagues heard me and ran over to apologise for his colleague, but by then the damage was done!
Last but not least....
People who Use the Seat Next to Them As a Chair For Their Bags
==============================================
Pretty self explanatory. Last night I got on the bus with my work bag, and three shopping bags. Still, I placed some of the bags under my feet and one of them in my lap. The woman who got on after me had a tiny little handbag and a carrier bag which she placed on the seat next to her. By the time we had reached the second bus stop, the bus was pretty full and her seat was the only one free, still she still pulled a face and huffed and puffed when a gentleman asked her if she could move it....
Summary: I'm happy most of the time, I promise!

- 04/12/08 Thankfully have never come across Primark dude - but I agree COMPLETELY with all the others. Seriously, could have been my list! I live in London too and know what you mean - it is heightened here. Great review. |
