Advantages: You decide

Disadvantages: You decide

I think this speakers corner topic is quite a good idea, if you read the majority of reviews then you can get a pretty good picture of how people in general are thinking. The general idea is the same as that for the TV show hosted by Paul Merton. In the show a guest selected several items and Paul would decide with the help of the audience whether the subject matter should be placed in room 101 a mythical room where everything unwanted goes.

So I thought I'd chip in my twopence worth, which is no coincidence since the first thing I propose for room 101 is copper coins. They are basically worthless these days since nothing goes up by a 1p or 2p it's more in the region of 5p or 10p or in some cases even more. The only time you get a penny is when something costs a price ending in 99p. Getting rid of the penny would force retailers to show the price is pounds and therefore we'd now longer be conned into thinking we were spending £6 when in actual fact you were paying £7 minus a penny.

The next item for consideration is Road Tax, I've paid mine faithfully for years and have seen no significant improvement in the state of roads, in fact quite the opposite. So where does all that cash go. I'm all for bettering motorways and the like but do it proportionally, don't spend it all on a motorway down South or up North when the ordinary guy paying his tax just wants decent roads in HIS area. Every year it increases and every year the roads get worse. Very few new roads are built to reduce congestion, so my hard earned dosh is paid out and I see nothing in return.

Finally but by no means least I would like to nominate another tax. Well not strictly a tax but as good as. The TV licence. For years this has been a noose around many of our necks and as the road tax there isn't much to show for it. The only people benefiting from this are the grossly overpaid BBC stars. Repeats of repeats are not uncommon and the whole idea of a TV licence is way past it's sell by date.

Summary: A bit of a moan

I completely agree with your comments about the TV licence fee.

Jonathon Ross being paid £6Million, really annoys me!

I usually put my coppers into charity boxes.

I like coppers. We put them all aside like wigglylittleworm and as well as our own you often find ones that people have dropped on the ground, which the kids particularly like!
