Advantages: big enough to have real influence
Disadvantages: squandering money
A brief involvement with the RSPCA many years ago has left a very nasty taste in my mouth, especially as it's clear that nothing has changed. I became involved with a group of people who were interested in setting up a local branch of the organisation - because we wanted to help animals. Big chiefs from RSPCA head office came to talk to us and quickly made it very clear that all they wanted was a pack of fundraisers, all money we raised had to be handed over to them and we would have no say whatsoever in how it was spent. Various concerns were raised about the provision for animal welfare in our town, and we were basically told 'tough'. Somewhat disillusioned I went to help at their local shelter. Well, I just wasn't tough enough. To see so many healthy cats and dogs destroyed every week was heartbreaking. It wasn't as though the RSPCA didn't have enough money to keep them, they just had other priorities like a group of Press Officers earning over 22k each. I'm not saying the RSPCA never does a useful job. But I'll give my money to other humane societies which pledge to keep lower overheads and never forget that the animals come first.

- 22/03/01 Unfortunately they're not alone in forgetting their core purpose and running their charity as a business operation. All the big ones are guilty of being driven by their fundraisers / marketing people. |
