Advantages: helping animals who can't help themselves
Disadvantages: pretending to be police
The RSPCA is a charity that promotes the wellbeing of animals. It has around 150 branches that are funded by charity shops around the country as well as general charity donations. These donations make them around £100 million a year, so they are by no means a small-fry set up!
I used to be a member of the RSPCA as a child, and I have to say they are worth joining. Not only do they send you a nice magazine, they also replied to all of my letters and pictures. They are a charity that really cares for its members, and that has stuck with me through the years.
All charity shops are for decent causes, but I find the staff tend to be nicer in the RSPCA branches, because they're there for the love of animals specifically, which makes a bond between them and customers.
One of the many things they do is take lost or abandoned animals and take care of them, hoping to rehouse them. If they can't rehouse them they put them down, so I would really recommend trying to find a pet in their shelters before buying somewhere else.
The charity also investigate claims of animal cruelty, and this is a vital service that they do. Who can forget the stories on Animal Hospital back in the day? If you suspect someone of abusing an animal, give them a ring. However, they have no power to prosecute, and are not in any way a law enforcing organisation.
Occasionally their employees seem to pretend they are police to gain access to houses, but you can't criticise the whole charity for the actions of a couple of power obsessed people can you?
All in all, the RSPCA do a good job and are a well organised charity. Support them today!
