Pete Sampras is a tennis player in his own league, this year he was knocked out o Wimbledon, but yet his status amongst his fans is legendary. His image is good amongst his fans, though his critics and those who commentate on him still manage to find faults in him. He has won twelve grand slams in his career, and is continuing to break records. This season has been a let down and not what his fans are used to, I remember when Boris Becker was the king of tennis but then came this man a man who dominated the game for year’s to come. Breaking records along the way, he went passed Roy Emerson's record for grand slams wins and along the way confirmed his ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Pete Sampras: Running on Empty? (390 words)

Could it be that "pistol" Pete Sampras is running out of steam? He never looked dominant at Wimbledon this year. Before he was knocked out by one of the younger set coming through, he went to 5 sets with one of our lower ranked Brits. Normally he would have dispatched him with ease but he seemed to lack 2 important ingredients. Concentration and determination. Lets face it, Wimbledon is about true grit. About doing nothing else for 2 weeks but live with a raquet in your hand. No time to have a mental relapse during a service game, or your opponent will pick you apart on grass. No chance to recover. Normally, Pete's Ice cold ...  Read the complete review

Well Pistol Pete came a-riding, a-riding into town, Holding his six gun, shooting all comers down. He'd had many a man and was hunting even more When he came upon a youngster, standing for the law Now Pete pulled his piece and readied for the fight But Little Roger stood his ground and battled through the night Now Big Pete felt his shoulder as Young Roger's aim was true And with a mighty roar the giant slinger Roger slew ... And so at last, the unbelievable has happened and the man with the thickest eyebrows in sport has finally bitten the dust, after seven incredible Wimbledon wins in the last eight years. He had been ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Pete Sampras: The End of an Era? (611 words)
by - written on 03/07/01 (Very useful, 42 readings)

Sampras used to be the dominant force in world tennis, especially when it came to Wimbledon. But this year he crashed out in the fourth round to the relatively unknown Roger Federer. This was in addition to a 5 set epic in the second round against the British hopeful B.Cowan, where Sampras eventually emerged victorious with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 6-7, 4-6, 6-3. He did have straight sets victories in the first and third rounds, but somehow he never looked at his best. So it begs the question to be asked, is Sampras past it? It seems absurd that at the relatively young age of 29 we should be asking this question, but with the incredible fitness demanded by Tennis ...  Read the complete review
